Rangers Take Flight Overpowering Skyhawks in Conference Matchup

DURANGO, Colo—The Regis University Women's Basketball team defeated Fort Lewis College in a Saturday afternoon RMAC matchup. The Rangers improve to 4-4 (2-0 RMAC), while the Skyhawks fell to 3-5 (1-1 RMAC).
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
 
Fort Lewis would be the first points on the board, but Taylin Serlen would respond quickly with a layup, assisted by Erin Fry. Regis continued their momentum going on a four-point run with a three and layup from Fry, RU leads 8-2. Skyhawks narrowed the gap with a three-pointer, but Serlen responded with back-to-back layups to end the first quarter, giving the Rangers a 19-17 edge.
 
Athena Saragoza came out hot for the Rangers, scoring their first five points. Jessica Bollwahn got a tip-in off of Saragoza, extending RU's lead to 32-25. Fort Lewis answered with a jumper and layup. Fry found Fiona Snashall in the corner for a triple. Skyhawks closed the half with two free throws. Regis led 37-34 going into the half.
 
Rangers would score the first six points with jumpers from Bollwahn and Snashall. Regis continued to dominate on the defensive side, not allowing the Skyhawks to score for seven straight positions. Erin Fry capped off the third quarter with a deep three-pointer, extending the Rangers' lead to 62-47.
 
The Skyhawks started scoring in the fourth until Fry and Saragoza scored from beyond the arc. Regis maintained I ts offensive dominance throughout the game with a jumper from Fry and free throws by Serlen. Natalie Thornton drained a three to close the game for the Rangers, 76-65.
 
GAME NOTES
 
Four Rangers would have double digits, Saragoza for 20, Fry totaled 18, Snashall 13, and Bollwahn had 10.
 
Fry dished 12 assists.
 
Snshall and Serlen led Ru with seven boards each.
 
Rangers outshot the Skyhawks 43.5% to 41.7% and to 41.9% to 31.3% from three.
