RAPID CITY, SD. – The Regis University women's basketball team traveled to Rapid City on Friday, to take on the South Dakota School of Mines and Technology Hardrockers.
The Rangers (19-5 overall, 14-4 RMAC) shot a staggering 48.4% from the field (30-for-62) en route to their 71-53 win over the Hardrockers (5-18 overall, 5-12 RMAC).
HOW IT HAPPENED
It was all about the post players up in South Dakota as graduate student Sam Deem and Morgan L. Smith led the Rangers in scoring with 18 and 12 points, respectively.
"46 points in the paint really stood out to me as a highlight and that's a huge credit to our post group going 15-25 led by Sam and Morgan," said Regis women's basketball head coach, Molly Marrin.
The Hardrockers wasted no time getting on the board on Friday, jumping out to a 7-4 lead by the 7:07 mark in the first.
But the Rangers answered right back with two layups and a free throw to tie the game at seven and then expanded the lead to as many as 11 at the end of the quarter to lead, 21-10.
South Dakota Mines didn't give up, however, as they started the second quarter with a 9-5 scoring run, and a 11-4 run in the fourth but were unable to overcome the Rangers' offensive performance.
Deem and Smith not only led the Rangers in points, but combined for 10 rebounds on the night. Leading that rebounding effort was senior guard Madison Diercks, with six.
Deem finished with 18 points off a 8-for-11 (72.7%) performance in the paint, 50% (1-for-2) from the free throw line, and nailing her sole three-point shot attempt. Smith joined Deem in double-digits, shooting 71.4% (5-for-7) from the field, and going 2-for-3 (66.6%) from the charity stripe.
Regis' defense gave the Hardrockers some fits in the paint as Olivia Pitrof, Sydney Speights, and Smith all had one block a piece.
In addition, six of SDM's 15 turnovers were steals thanks to graduate student guard Josey Ryan, Smith, and Diercks, all who had two steals a piece.
Sam and Morgan both did a great job of sealing defenders down low and taking the reads that they were given in transition, they were both outstanding tonight," said Marrin. "I also really liked how we weathered some runs and created some runs of our own from our defense."
