DENVER, Colo. – The Regis University women's basketball team hosted the Colorado Mesa University Mavericks on Friday, but were unable to dig themselves out of an early hole and fell short at the buzzer, 51-62.
The Rangers (17-5 overall, 12-4 RMAC) only scored three points the entire first quarter and were unable to recover despite outscoring the Mavericks 38-29 (18-4 overall, 12-3 RMAC) in the second half.
HOW IT HAPPENED
An unusually quiet offensive performance for the Rangers led to a first quarter 14-3 deficit and a 33.3% (19-for-57) total shooting percentage on the night that resulted in their fourth loss of the season.
The Rangers' shooting percentage steadily increased throughout the 40 minutes, going from a 6.67% (1-for-15) shooting to 50% (7-for-14) by the final buzzer, but that wouldn't be enough for a Mavericks team that scored in the double-digits every quarter.
Senior guard Erin Fry led all Rangers in points with 16, accompanied by graduate student guard Josey Ryan and third-year Athena Saragoza in double digits at 14 and 10 points, respectively.
Fifth-year Sam Deem and graduate student forward Morgan L. Smith tied for a team-high eight rebounds while Deem also recorded a career-high four steals.
