Rangers pour in runs in Game Two but split Day One against UCCS

DENVER, Colo. – Playing on their home field for the first time in about a month, the Regis University softball team split Day One of its four-game series against the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs Mountain Lions.

The Rangers (20-14 overall, 16-8 RMAC) exploded for 11 runs on the day in Game Two but settled for a 1-0 loss to the Mountain Lions (12-23 overall, 9-17 RMAC) in Game One that turned into a pitcher's duel.

"After dropping Game One, I'm very proud of how the group reset and got back into the focus and earned the split for the day and I thought Kylie pitched a great game in Game One," said Regis softball head coach, Nicole Thompson. "We just didn't help her out offensively. With the offense that we have, we have to score more than one run on any given day. But they reset and got the split in Game Two."

GAME TWO | HOW IT HAPPENED
For the first time since Feb. 25, the Rangers played a doubleheader without hitting a single home run. But that wasn't an issue for Regis as they put together a 13-hit performance that capitalized on a flat-footed Mountain Lions' defense and scored a total of 11 runs.

It was all about the fifth inning for the Rangers, who steadily added at least one run in almost every frame but erupted for five runs in the fifth that started with a defensive blunder by the Mountain Lions to score two.

With the score at 7-5 in the bottom of the fifth and no outs on the board, Regis kept raining runs thanks to a two-run double from junior infielder Miia Campos and a sacrifice bunt from freshman infielder Jessica Isbell.

The Mountain Lions tried to erase the five-run deficit by adding two more runs to their total, but right-handed reliever Katherine Raper kept them off-balance and ended the top of the sixth with a strike out.

Raper finished the game with Regis' first save of the season and a total of five strikeouts and three hits in 2.1 innings of work.

Freshman right-hander Ava Edwards earned her third win of the series thanks to a 4.2 inning performance giving up only one earned run.

"This is the second series where Ava's come out and has looked strong and confident on the mound. She's a different look than what Kylie is and I think that plays to her strengths," said Thompson. "She's starting to get to the circle and just trusting her stuff. When that defense can play behind her, she's really at the top of her game. Kat did the same thing last week, too. She's getting that confidence and starting to figure things out if we get runners on and is able to keep things going. She also had some huge strikeouts when it mattered. I'm really proud of her for how she worked to be able to come out in that closing spot in Game Two."

GAME ONE | HOW IT HAPPENED
Game One was a duel in the pitcher's circle with only one total run scored the entire game.

Junior right-hander Kylie Harpman kept the Mountain Lions guessing with seven strikeouts and only one earned run, but UCCS' Katelyn Kilgore was able to lift one over the right field fence for a solo home run.

"Kylie's just getting into her groove here in these last couple of weeks and today was just another day for her. To give up that home run really wasn't on her and we should've been able to get it back and then some," Thompson said. "For her to keep them off balance I thought she created some great sequences. She located the ball well for her strikeouts. I'm proud of that confidence she's growing and the momentum she's gaining on the mound."

UP NEXT
Regis wraps up its four-game series with one more doubleheader on Friday. First pitch is scheduled for 11 AM.

"I thought our line up, one through nine, got that second game back to us. We didn't hit a home run today, but we found different ways to score. The bottom of our lineup really helped us out, too, which allowed our big kids to do what they're known to do," said Thompson. "When you can do that and flip that lineup over and keep that momentum, it's hard for a defense to hold you. We told our kids that we have to make the adjustments to their Game One starter and have to come out hungry, ready to go, and win this series."
