DURANGO, Colo. – The Regis University softball team wrapped up their trip down to Durango on Saturday, ending the day with a split and subsequently splitting the series with Fort Lewis College.
The Rangers (14-12 overall, 10-6 RMAC) opened Day Two with a 6-1 win over the Skyhawks (7-18 overall, 5-11 RMAC) while dropping the second game, 7-6.
"Today's split is a tough one but the season is long and we just need to start making some adjustments and tighten things up in many areas," said Regis softball head coach, Nicole Thompson.
GAME ONE | HOW IT HAPPENED
With junior right-hander Kylie Harpman earning her 13th start, Harpman kept the Skyhawks to only one run thanks to a six hit and seven strikeout performance scattered across her seven-inning complete game.
"Kylie was lights out today and I am so proud of her," said Thompson. "She has made some big strides here lately on the mound and today was good to see confidence from her."
Offensively, Game One saw a slow start for both sides as nobody scored until the Rangers dropped four runs in the fifth inning.
Freshman designated hitter Rachel Barriga led the charge in the fifth with a double to centerfield to score two while fellow first-year Sydney Young and junior outfielder Abby Larsen drove in one run each.
Up 4-0 going into the top of the seventh, Regis took advantage of Amiee Shanks' pitching and knocked in two more runs thanks to a single from Larsen and a sacrifice fly from junior shortstop Ariana Ybarra.
Fort Lewis scored its only run of the game in the bottom of the seventh.
"Rachel Barriga had a big weekend and was a key factor for us," Thompson said. "She was clutch when we needed her. It was also good to see Abby's adjustments at the plate and come up big when we needed her."
GAME TWO | HOW IT HAPPENED
Despite the Rangers accumulating 12 total hits, the Rangers were unable to push across the tying run in the top of the seventh.
Fort Lewis jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first but Regis answered back with two of their own in the third thanks to a double from junior infielder Morgan Norris.
The Skyhawks answered with two more runs in the bottom of the third as Regis exploded in the top of the fourth to score a total of four.
Untimely errors for the Rangers cost them a total of four runs in the bottom half of the inning as the Skyhawks reclaimed the lead, 7-6.
UP NEXT
The Rangers return to Denver to host the Colorado School of Mines in a four game series. First pitch is scheduled for Saturday at 12 PM.
"We need to bounce back this week, get back to work at practice and be intentional with things," Thompson said.
