Vanessa Candito shuts the door on Yellow Jackets as Rangers earn series sweep

DENVER, Colo. – With the series sweep set in their sights, the Regis University softball team took care of business on Monday and finished the four-game series against the Black Hills State University Yellow Jackets with two wins and their fourth series sweep of the year.

The Rangers (26-14 overall, 22-8 RMAC) offense erupted in the third inning of both games with four runs scored in the same inning each game against the Yellow Jackets (12-23 overall, 11-19 RMAC).

"I'm proud of this group because beating a team four times is tough. We're getting into the thick of things and we did the little things right at the right time today and it was a good day to win these last two games to win the sweep," said Regis softball head coach, Nicole Thompson.

GAME ONE | HOW IT HAPPENED
Game One came down to the final out on Monday as the Yellow Jackets scored five in the top of the seventh to tie the game at

Freshman infielder Sydney Young put herself on with a single to right center that set up the walk-off win for the Rangers. Junior outfielder Abby Larsen laid down a perfect sacrifice bunt to put Young in position.

Sophomore outfielder Sienna Reed came through for the Rangers and reached thanks to a defensive blunder by BHSU that allowed Young to score the game-winning run.

Setting the stage earlier in the game was a third-inning offensive performance that featured four total runs.

Young pushed one across with a groundout to shortstop, but the biggest contribution came from freshman infielder Jessica Isbell with a bases-clearing single.

Sophomore right-hander Vanessa Candito earned her third win of the season despite only facing two batters in the BHSU lineup. Those two batters, however, proved to be crucial as they allowed Candito to secure the last out of the visitor-half of the inning and prevent any more Yellow Jacket runs.

"I'm so proud of Vanessa. She's come in in some big moments lately and we've had to work on things in the bullpen and at practice but she came through," Thompson said. "She's a kid who's really hard on herself and wants to be perfect which is hard as a pitcher but I've had faith in her and so it's awesome to see her confidence come out these two days. She was put in some really difficult spots and she never wilted and came out strong for us and gave our offense a chance to win some games and shut them down."

GAME TWO | HOW IT HAPPENED
Both teams scored a run in their respective half of the first inning, and were blanked in the second until another four-run third inning put Regis on top for good.
Leading the offensive charge in the third was junior infielder Morgan Norris who swung on the first pitch she saw and sent it over the center field fence, just short of the scoreboard, to score two.

Reed joined Norris with a solo shot of her own almost in the same exact spot Norris' ended up in.

Rounding out the effort in the home half of the third was sophomore designated hitter Isabella Porter who singled through the right side to score Regis' fifth and final run.

The Yellow Jackets started to make a comeback in the top of the fifth inning, but a combined effort between senior right-hander Katherine Raper and Candito blanked BHSU for the rest of the game.

"I always have to stay positive and patient with this group because when you know you have the squad we do and know what they're capable of, you just have to wait for their moment," Thompson said. "This late in the season, they're doing a really good job of taking at-bat with full intention and not for granted. When they get in the box they don't think the pitcher's going to beat them. Those back-to-back home runs, that takes momentum away from the other team, big time."

UP NEXT
The Rangers will travel across town for a four-game series against #7 Colorado Christian University. First pitch is scheduled for 12 PM out at All-Star Park on April 13th.

"I think we're 22-8 in conference right now so it's anybody's game these last three weeks. We have to take care of business and we hold our own destiny and we just need to get back to practice. They're a good team across town but there's no doubt in my mind that we have the squad to put it to them this year."
