Rangers finish 2024 season against West Texas A&M

CANYON, Tex. – The Regis University softball team ended its magical postseason run on Friday after a 6-5 loss against #5 seed Oklahoma Christian University and a 7-0 loss to #1 seed West Texas A&M in the opening round of the NCAA Regional.

The Rangers (33-26 overall) pushed the Eagles (34-21 overall) to the final inning, tying the game at 5-5 in the sixth, but came up short. In their game against the Lady Buffs (50-7 overall) Regis collected four hits but were unable to push any across.

OKLAHOMA CHRISTIAN | HOW IT HAPPENED

OCU jumped out to an early 5-0 lead in the third with a four spot in that same inning and a lone run in the first.

Despite the 5-0 deficit, the Rangers held fast and put up four runs of their own in the home half of the fourth inning.

Three different Rangers were responsible for the four runs in the fourth as freshman Jessica Isbell singled down the right field line to score two, junior third baseman Miia Campos walked in another, and junior catcher Rachel Williams singled to center field for the fourth.

Down by one, junior first baseman Morgan Norris drew a bases-loaded walk in the bottom of the sixth for the fifth run for the Rangers and tied the game at 5-5.

OCU scored the winning run off an error at the plate as the Rangers were unable to score any more in the bottom of the seventh.

Junior right-hander Kylie Harpman and sophomore right-hander Vanessa Candito finished the game with six strikeouts and only one walk.

WEST TEXAS A&M | HOW IT HAPPENED

Regis left a total of eight on base, but West Texas' pitching prevented the Rangers from scoring any of those runners.

Regis threatened as early as the first inning as Campos got on board with a walk in the home half of the first inning.

Sophomore right-hander Candito earned the start for the Rangers, and kept the Lady Buffs within two runs through the first four innings.

With the score at 2-0, freshman Sydney Young hit a double down the left field line to be the first Ranger in scoring position, but the Rangers were unable to bring her home.

The Lady Buffs added five more runs through the remaining three innings to take the win

Four different Rangers recorded at least one hit while Candito, Harpman, and sophomore right-hander Hallie Crappell came together for two strikeouts.

With the loss, Regis ends its season with its first tournament championship since 2015 and its first NCAA Regional appearance since that same year.
