AUSTIN, Texas. – The Regis University Women's Soccer team secured their first victory of the season in dominant fashion on Thursday afternoon, topping St. Edward's University (Texas), 4-1. The Rangers improve to 1-4 on the season, while the Hilltoppers fall to 1-1-1.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Taylor Brown would take the first shot of the match, an on-target attempt that was saved by Daria Schlumbohm in the seventh minute. The Rangers would keep the offensive pressure going, as Natalie Bunch scored an unassisted goal at 9:09, and over the next 10 minutes, Bunch and Madeline Gardner would take three more shots. At 29:40, Bunch's on goal attempt would be saved, but Alex Baer would be there for the put-back, putting Regis ahead 2-0. SEU attempted a pair of shots to close out the half, but none would be on goal.
Sarah Wynn, Stella Straubing, and Elsa Nolen attempted shot early in the second as RU continued the aggressive offense, but it would be St. Edward's that found the net next, as Annie Rocha put the Hilltoppers on the board at 71:52. Nolen would respond 10 minutes later, scoring on a Paige Davis assist, and the Rangers would not relent to close out the match, as Gardner added the fourth score of the day at 83:38 to bring in the 4-1 win.
"Obviously it feels good to get the monkey off our backs," said Head Coach Jeff Frykholm. "The ladies really played hard in some awfully tough conditions-- 2 pm kick off in 95 degrees. But they kept fighting and I was really happy with the response after the game went 2-1. To dig deep and finish off the game with those two final goals was a good character moment. Really happy for the team."
