DENVER, Colo. - Regis University's women's soccer team claimed their second win of the season and first of conference play with a 3-0 victory over neighborhood foe Colorado Christian University Sunday afternoon. The Rangers improve to 2-5-1 (1-1 RMAC) while the Cougars move to 2-4-1 (1-1 RMAC).
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Cougars began on the offensive, but the Rangers drew first blood on a goal from Madeline Gardner at 30:27. Freshman Fernanda Rodriguez assisted Gardner, tallying her first points as a Regis Ranger during the Sunday matinee.
The home team's momentum held into the second half. Anchoring the Rangers' defensive effort was goalkeeper Grace Glover, playing from buzzer to buzzer and recording nine saves. The Rangers' steady attack was supported by a new on-field formation that increased defensive support.
"We changed our system a little bit to provide a little more security in the back, and I think that knowing we had an extra player on the back line just gave everybody a little more confidence to not fear making a mistake," head coach Jeff Frykholm said.
The Rangers struck again at 57:54 on a header goal from Madison Cullinan, assisted by Stella Staubing. Closing the game in heads up fashion, the Rangers drew CCU's goalie out of the net and converted on yet another header, assisted by Malia Salema and finished by Rodriguez.
Five Rangers recorded points in the match across three assisted goals.
"We have been seeking that sort of coordinated, orchestrated, manufactured goal. We've had goals in the form of individual effort earlier this year, but to have some goals that were coordinated and out of the flow of play really feels good," Frykholm said.
Sunday's win rouses the Ranger crew as they move into a challenging slate of RMAC competition.
GAME NOTES
Colorado Christian out-shot Regis, including nine shots on goal to Regis's five.
Regis recorded nine saves while CCU tallied two.
