GOLDEN, Colo. – The Regis University Women's Volleyball team, ranked #13 in the AVCA DII Preseason Coaches Poll, dropped a pair of matches on the final day of the Colorado School of Mines Oredigger Classic on Saturday. RU is not 1-3 on the year.
The Rangers lost 0-3 (20-25, 23-25, 12-25) to #5 Concordia University - St. Paul in the early game, then 0-3 (18-25, 27-29, 16-25) to Missouri Western State University in the final match.
Senior DS Bre Skala and Senior MB Amelia Davis were both named to the All-Tournament Team.
How it Happened
Concordia-St. Paul
Halle Theis started the first set with an early pair of kills and a Lindsey Cure assisted block, but after a Hannah Kepler kill, the Golden Bears ran four straight for the 13-9 lead. Theis would score three straight points on a pair of kills an another block assist with Cure, but the Rangers were unable to close the gap, losing the first 25-20.
Regis had a balanced attack to start the second, with kills coming form Kepler, Theis, and Amelia Davis, and a Davis-Thies block gave RU the 12-11 lead. However, another quick 4-0 run by CUSP gave them the advantage again, and while Regis would tie the match multiple times, on kills by Davis and Reagan Hickey, they were unable to take back the lead. After a late Bryn McNair kill and Davis solo block, Concordia would win, 25-23.
Regis jumped out to an early lead in the fourth behind Davis and Braziah Dixon, but the Golden Bears would take command, going on multiple runs and winning 25-12.
"I thought we competed well against CUSP," said Head Coach Joel List. "They are a tough team to play because they are very low error offensively and we couldn't score enough to win a set. We put ourselves in a good position in the second set to win but couldn't capitalize."
Game Notes
· Theis posted nine kills, while Davis, Kepler, and McNair each had six.
· Hickey dished 26 assists, and Bre Skala had 11 digs.
· Davis tied a match-high five blocks.
Missouri Western
The Griffins would quickly build a 12-3 lead to start the first set, and while Davis ended the run with a kill, and Cure scored from a kill and Kepler-assisted block, RU would still find themselves behind 9-15. Kepler's kill sparked a 5-1 run, but it was not enough, and Missouri Western would win 25-18.
McNair started a 5-0 run with a kill early in the third to put Regis ahead, 9-7, and an Isabella Smith service ace made it 11-8. MWSU tied the match at 13-13, but a Theis kill and block, as well as one form Davis and McNair kept RU un the lead. Dixon's ace and a Kepler kill had the Rangers on set point, but the Griffins had the last push, winning 29-27.
Missouri Western built another comfortable lead to start the third, 7-2, and would keep the Rangers at bay, as despite Thies and Kepler aces, and Reagan and Davis kills, RU was unable to close the deficit, losing 16-25.
"It was more of the same story vs Missouri Western where we needed to earn some more points," added List. "We are still learning how to battle with teams and once we figure that out we will be in the place we want to be."
Game Notes
· Theis led all players with 10 kills on .304 hitting, while Davis and Kepler each had eight.
· Reagan had a match high 31 assists.
· Skala and Kepler each had double digit digs, with 21 and 10, respectively.
