DENVER, Colo. – The Regis University Men's Basketball team secured their second straight win over a top ranked team, downing Colorado School of Mines, ranked #7 in the NABC Coaches Poll, and #6 in the D2 CSC Media Poll, 94-91, at home on Saturday evening. The Rangers improve to 10-8 (8-2 RMAC), while the Orediggers fall to 15-3 (9-1 RMAC).
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Rangers came out strong on defense, as two steals from Trey Bryant and one from Jalen Page led to an early 8-6 lead. Kobe Sanders and Chase Mayo Harmon scored from deep on consecutive possessions, then Bryant earned three the old fashioned way with an and-one for the 16-10 lead. Jalen Brown finished through contact to keep the lead at five, then Sanders would take over, scored 11 straight points for Regis, including three straight threes. With 5:45 left in the half, Bryant found page in the paint to put RU up, 36-23. Mines hit a three with 1:30 left for the final points of the period, and Regis took a 42-34 lead into the break.
Mayo Harmon scored in the paint, then found Quinn Lambert for a layup as Regis kept CSM at bay, leading by five. Another steal from Page led to a Sanders fastbreak layup, and RU continued to attack the paint, scoring on three straight layups, all assisted by Sanders. Aaron Ofstun scored on a setup from Brown, then Brown, jumping our of bounds to save a ball, found Mayo Harmon for another three and the 71-62 lead. Despite Eddy Egun and Mayo Harmon being true from the free throw line, and Sanders hitting another from downtown, Mines closed the lead to just two with 1:49 left. The rangers were clutch with their free throws, and a final heave from Mines missed high as Regis claimed the 94-91 win.
"Tonight was a huge full team effort," said Head Coach Brady Bergeson. "Putting 40 quality minutes together against a team of that magnitude is not easy. Our kids deserve a lot of credit and I'm very proud of them."
