Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Rangers Down #13 Fort Lewis on Senior Day

DENVER, Colo. – The Regis University Men's Soccer team hosted #13 Fort Lewis College on Sunday afternoon, and claimed a 3-1 victory. The Rangers improve to 7-5-4 (5-2-2 RMAC), while the Skyhawks fall to 8-4-4 (4-3-2 RMAC).

HOW IT HAPPENED

Rayhan Carlson-Du Toit recorded the first shot of the match, but that was quickly followed by a Skyhawk attempt, saved by Zach Jennings. The teams traded off-target shots before Jason Robles landed the first attempt on goal for RU in the 23rd minute. Jennings saved two back-to-back attempts, and a third three minutes later, to keep the match at 0-0. Each team posted one more SOG to close out the half, the game still a stalemate.

Fort Lewis put in the first goal of the match under three minutes into he second half, scored by Francisco Pinto. However, in the 57th minute, Tom Devonport evened the score at 1-1. He started a break, then Elias Taubo wove a pass past three defenders to set up the score. Less than 10 minutes later, Taubo's shot hit the left post, but Robles was there for the rebound and goal, putting Regis up, 2-1. The game got heated late, with a variety of cards being given, but Abram Wilson added an insurance goal in the final minute on a break assist by Jacobo Betancourt-Tovar, and Regis downed the Skyhawks, 3-1.

"These games against Fort Lewis are always intense," said Devonport, who scored his first career goal in the match. "The crowd, our teammates on the bench, everyone made it a great atmosphere. A couple weeks ago, Coach told us to not focus on results, focus on why we play, and who we play for."

"Fort Lewis is one of the most high-octane teams in the league, so limiting them to just one goal today was huge," added Head Coach Taylor Diem. "Especially with the standing how they are right now."

"It's difficult when you concede a goal early, and there was a time that the game got away from us a little, but the guys didn't lose their heads. Now going ahead, we just need to stay focused with the final match against Mines on Wednesday."

GAME NOTES

·        Regis totaled 14 shots, with eight on goal

·        Fort Lewis took 11 with six on target

·        Both keepers saved five shots

·        FLC took two more corners, 8-6
