DENVER, Colo. – The Regis University Men's Soccer team, who were receiving votes in the most recent United Soccer Coaches Top 25 Poll, defeated Colorado School of Mines on Wednesday night, 3-0. The Rangers improve to 8-5-4 (6-2-2 RMAC), while the Orediggers drop to 3-10-4 (2-8-0 RMAC).
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Rangers came out of the gates blazing, as Jack Shimkus set up Jacobo Betancourt-Tovar for a goal just :31 seconds in. After Julian Fally missed high, Elias Taubo scored an unassisted goal in the eighth minute. From there, Jason Robles and Matys Price had shots saved, while Betancourt-Tovar had another blocked. Abram Wilson also put a shot on goal, followed by the Orediggers first shot, which missed high. The Rangers took four quick shots in the 37th minute, with Jan Grillitsch and Kalani Harris' shots being saved. From there, the Rangers did not allow a shot for the rest of the half, going into the break up, 2-0.
Seven minutes into the second half, Julian Fally sent a ball three quarters up the field to a streaking Betancourt-Tovar, who converted the goal to extend the Rangers' lead to 3-0. From there, the Regis defense settled in, allowing just one off-target shot over the next 20 minutes, while the Ranger offense attempted just two. Robles put a shot on target, but a diving save prevented the goal. Late in the match, Abram Wilson missed left, and Taubo hit the crossbar, and the match ended in victory, 3-0.
