DENVER, Colo. – The Regis University Women's Basketball team defeated New Mexico Highlands University, 84-80, in an RMAC faceoff Saturday afternoon. The Rangers improve to 8-11 (6-6 RMAC), while the Cowgirls fall to 9-9 (6-6 RMAC).
HOW IT HAPPENED
Athena Saragoza opened the scoring for the Rangers, with assists from
Erin Fry and
Addison Branscum, sparking a quick 10-point run that gave the Rangers a 14-4 lead. The Rangers kept the momentum going with a pair of threes from Saragoza and Fry. Regis finished the first quarter on top of the Cowgirls, 22-17.
Saragoza continued her strong play, scoring the first seven points for Regis in the second quarter.
Fiona Snashall and
Taylin Serlen added baskets for RU, but the Cowgirls closed out the half with a three-pointer. Regis led 35-31 at the break.
After halftime, Regis came out strong with layups from Fry, Serlen, and Saragoza, going on a 16-point run. The Cowgirls halted the momentum with an and-one layup, then scored the next 13 points, closing the gap to 58-53. Fry ended the third quarter with a step-back three, and RU led 61-55 heading into the fourth.
Highlands carried their momentum into the final period with a layup and a three-pointer. Saragoza responded by scoring the next seven points for RU, maintaining their slim lead at 70-68. Snashall and
Kylin Shipman nailed key free throws down the stretch, sealing the win for Regis, 84-80.
GAME NOTES
Saragoza led all Rangers with 28 points followed by Fry with 24 points and nine assist.
Branscum and Serlen grabbed seven rebounds each.
Cowgirls had four players in double figures, led by Contreaz 19 points.
RU outshot the cowgirls 45.3% to 44.6% from the floor and 40.0% to 36.0% from three.
