Salt Lake City, UT – The Regis University Women's Basketball team defeated Westminster University, 82-73, in an RMAC face off Thursday night. The Rangers improve to 9-11 (7-6 RMAC), while the Griffins fall to 4-16 (3-10 RMAC).
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Rangers came out hot, going on a nine-point run started by
Fiona Snashall's triple and a jumper by
Jessica Bollwahn, giving Regis an 11-2 lead.
Mary Crossland was found on a fast-break layup, with an assist from
Athena Saragoza, bringing the score to 18-7. Neither team scored in the final minute and a half of the first quarter, with the Rangers leading 18-11 going into the second.
Bollwahn and
Addison Branscum kicked off the second-half scoring for Regis with a couple of tip-ins. Saragoza nailed one from behind the arc, assisted by
Erin Fry, and Bollwahn followed with back-to-back layups, extending RU's lead to 30-20. The Griffins found momentum, scoring six straight to tie the game 34-34 with two minutes to go. Saragoza found Snashall on a fast-break three to end the half, with RU leading 39-36.
Saragoza and Fry started the scoring for RU with a three and a jumper, but Westminster followed suit. Both teams continued trading baskets until Saragoza hit one from downtown, putting Regis ahead 58-55. Fry ended the third with a free throw, putting the Rangers up 59-57.
RU scored the first points of the fourth with a jumper from
Taylin Serlen and a triple from Fry. Branscum added two layups for Regis, followed by Saragoza's three. Fry and Bollwahn sealed the deal with a pair of free throws, and the Rangers won 82-73.
GAME NOTES
Saragoza led RU with 21 points, while Fry followed with 17 points and Snashall 14 points.
Bollwahn recorded a double double with 13 points and 14 rebounds.
Griffins were led by Teuila Nawahine with 22 points.
Regis out rebounded Westminster 48-37.
Griffins out shot RU from the field 43.7% to 41.4% but RU outshot Griffins 34.4% to 31.0% from three.
