DENVER, Colo. – The Regis University Men's Basketball defeated University of Colorado Colorado Springs, 93-90 in overtime, on Tuesday night in the RMAC Quarterfinals. Regis was seeded No. 2 in the Tournament, while UCCS was the No. 7 seed. The Rangers continue on at 17-12 (14-6 RMAC). The Mountain Lions finish their season at 17-12 (11-9 RMAC).
HOW IT HAPPENED
Kobe Sanders started the scoring for RU with a triple, assisted
Trey Bryant. The Mountain Lions jumped out to a seven-point lead, 12-5 until
Eddy Egun stopped the momentum with a layup. Bryant would get a steal and layup followed by a layup from
Jalen Page bringing the score within one, 17-16 UCCS.
Chase Mayo Harmon would continue the momentum with a triple and jumper from Page. Both teams traded small runs with help from Egun's triple and a jumper from Sanders, Rangers would take the lead 32-30. Sanders maintained the momentum with a pair of free throws and nailing one from deep. Regis would go on a 12-point run going up 47-35 with under a minute to go. UCCS would close in on the Rangers, but it wasn't enough at the half, RU ahead 47-40.
The Mountain Lions came out hot tying the game at 49-49. Egun would get a layup to go, followed by back-to-back triples from Sanders and a layup from
Jalen Brown, RU ahead 61-53. UCCS answered with a run, closing the lead to one until Sanders nailed one from downtown. 63-60 Rangers. Both teams exchanged momentum with a fastbreak layup from Bryant and Mayo Harmon Rangers would go up 72-67. Brown would hit two free throws with 50 seconds to go leading 81-77. UCCS would get a buzzer beater layup, sending the game into overtime at 81-81.
The Mountain Lions started the scoring in overtime followed by a layup from Sanders. Brown would hit two sets of free throws bringing the Rangers ahead 87-86. UCCS added a layup and Bryant followed with a pair of free throws, RU ahead 89-88. Neither team would score for the next minute until Sanders hit a free throw with 18 seconds to go. Brown closed of the win with a dunk, Rangers win 93-90.
"Obviously it was a very a tough one tonight that could have gone either way. I thought there were a few times we could have gotten discouraged and given up a run," said Head Coach
Brady Bergeson. "But our guys responded with focus and resilience, and that's why we found a way."
GAME NOTES
Mayo Harmon surpassed 1,000 points, scoring 21 on the night.
Sanders led RU with 31 points, shooting 46% from three.
Three other Rangers were in double digits, Mayo Harmon with 21 and Bryant and Brown each had 14.
Page and Bryant grabbed eight rebounds each.
UCCS was led by Carter and Pranger each having 21 points.
