Bordine Secures Series Sweep with Walk-Off Single

DENVER, Colo. – The Regis University Softball team battled RMAC foe New Mexico Highlands University on Sunday afternoon, winning both games of the doubleheader, 8-3 and 6-5. The Rangers improve to 17-28 (16-20), while the Cowgirls drop to 13-32 (7-29 RMAC).

GAME ONE

While the Cowgirls would get two baserunners in the top of the first inning, Regis struck first with an RBI single from Olivia Wick in the bottom of the first inning that scored Ariana Ybarra. Lima Magana followed that with a single that brought home Wick, and Angelina Romero-Barros earned an RBI while getting walked. Mia Moore's single brought the first inning total to 5-0 with a two-RBI single.

The Cowgirls got their first hit in the third inning, but the Rangers extended their lead as Mia Moore homered, inside the park, to score three runs. In the fourth frame, an RBI double got New Mexico Highlands on the board, while an RBI on a fielder's choice brought the score to 8-2.

Regis got two runners on with two hits in the bottom of the fourth, but were unable to bring them home. NMHU continued to chip away at the lead with an RBI grounder in the sixth. However, the Rangers got out of the pinch with two runners on, and a double play in the top of the seventh helped secure the 8-3 victory.

GAME NOTES

·        Moore went 2-2 at the plate, batting in five runs

·        Wick and Ybarra both produced two hits

·        Wick, Ybarra, and Jessica Isbell all stole a base

·        Karla Banegas went 1-4, scored a run, and batted in a run

·        Ava Edwards (1-6) earned the complete game win with three strikeouts

·        Kennedy Williams (3-9) recorded the loss

GAME TWO

Following the first inning, in which neither team recorded a hit, the Cowgirls led off the second with a double, and the Rangers loaded the bases, but both squads were still scoreless. The Rangers would be the first team on the board with an RBI from Bella Bordine that scored Ybarra in the bottom of the third inning.

NMHU got on the board on a single up the middle that scored one run, but Regis had an answer, as Ybarra's sacrifice fly batted in Moore. In the fifth inning, Highlands scored two run on a right field single to take their first lead of the game. But yet again, RU would have an answer, as Moore singled, which brought in Morgan Norris to tie the match again.

In the bottom of the sixth inning, Norris have Regis the lead with a center field double that scored Wick. NMHU battled back, getting on three runners, and batting in two runs with a double in the top of the seventh.

Regis loaded the bases in the bottom of the deciding frame, and with two outs Bella Bordine singled to the outfield, bringing in the winning runs, Chacon and Moore, for the 6-5, walk off win.

GAME NOTES

·        Bordine went 1-5, batting in three runs

·        Moore, Isbell, Norris, Chacon, and Ybarra all had multiple hits

·        Chacon stole one base

·        Alessandra De La Trinidad was 3-4 with four RBIs for Highlands

·        Vanessa Candito (5-3) earned the win, striking out six batters. Karla Banegas (1-13) recorded the loss

UP NEXT

The Rangers return to action on Friday, April 18, traveling to the University of Colorado Colorado Springs for a doubleheader starting at 12:00 PM.
