GUNNISON, Colo. – Fernanda Rodriguez scored twice and the Regis University women's soccer team moved their win streak to a dozen this afternoon as they earned themselves a road victory over Western Colorado University by a score of 2-0 at Katy O' Rady Field.
Regis is now 13-2 (9-0 RMAC) with their 12-game winning streak being the longest standing one in all of Division II this season. Western Colorado fell to 4-7-1 (2-5-1 RMAC).
Today's matchup was also a featured game for the RMAC's Mental Health Week with both teams wearing green shirts in the pregame sponsored by RADical Hope and showing their support for athletics all across the college landscape.
Rodriguez scored once in both halves of today's game to bolster the offense while now owning 15 goals this season which ranks her in the top 10 of program history for a single season. She is averaging one goal per game and is tied for the league lead in total goals scored.
Her first score came in the 17th minute of the first half as she snuck the ball into the bottom right corner of the net, past a diving goalkeeper.
Rodriguez was assisted by Paula Igual on the goal with Igual feeding her a beautiful pass up field to which Rodriguez then won the one-one-one battle with a Mountaineer defender before knocking it in.
The Rangers were able to add another goal in the second half to solidify their lead with Rodriguez once again finding the net in the 60th minute, this time off an assist from Brooke Castillo.
Castillo crossed the ball from near the post on this attempt with Rodriguez having a clear shot to the left side of the net for the easy score.
In the end, Regis only barely outshot the Mountaineers 11-9, but used their 5-3 advantage in the shots on goal category to record the pair of goals.
Maggie Payne recorded two saves, the other being a team save, to have back-to-back shutouts with her now owning five solo shutouts on the season.
