Rangers battle to 1-1 draw with Mavericks on Senior Day

DENVER, Colo. – The Regis University women's soccer team played to a 1-1 draw with Colorado Mesa University this afternoon as they celebrated Senior Day in their final regular season home game at the Regis Turf Fields.

The Rangers, who saw their 13-game winning streak be snapped by the tie, still remain undefeated in conference play with them already having secured the regular season title after Colorado Mesa lost their most recent game on Friday to UCCS.

This was their first RMAC regular season title since 2017 and seventh in program history.

Regis owns an overall record of 14-2-1 (10-0-1 RMAC) with them now just one game away from going undefeated in conference play. Colorado Mesa moves to 9-4-3 (7-2-2 RMAC) with today's decision with them now in a tie for third place of the conference standings.

This was just the first time all season the Rangers had played to a draw against an opponent as well with them snapping a two-game losing streak to the Mavs after being defeated the last two matchups.

In addition to the game result, the seven seniors of Aaliah Barwick, Brooke Castillo, Elsa Nolen, Bridget Hankins, Gianna Sparaco, Helen Stegner and Blake Plummer were all honored in the pregame with them luckily still getting to play at least one more game at home this season as the Rangers will host the semifinals and finals round of the conference tournament at the Regis Turf Fields.

Seedings and the tournament bracket will be released later this week.

In the 1-1 draw with CMU, both teams were able to score once in the first half but that was all the scoring that would occur as great defense and key play in the net limited both teams the rest of the way.

A total of 29 combined shots occurred in the game with CMU owning the advantage in both shooting categories at 16 overall and nine on goal.

Regis, however, collected eight saves in the net and were able to record eight corner kicks compared to the Mavs' four.

Elsa Nolen scored the Rangers' goal in the 8th minute of play to give them the early lead with her knocking the ball in on a chip shot after being set up nicely on an assist from Paula Igual.

That lead only managed to hold for 10 minutes though as CMU got their own score on a header attempt that ricocheted around a few defenders before barely creeping past the goal line in the bottom left corner.

Beyond the 18th minute of play, 23 more shots then took place the rest of the game with both teams trading possessions heavily.

Regis looked like they may have possibly scored the game-winning goal on another Nolen shot in the 50th minute but offsides was called.

In the end, six different Rangers attempted shots with Nolen's goal being her first of the season and the only one needed to escape with a draw.

Both Helen Stegner and Maggie Payne split duties in the net as well with each recording four saves apiece.

The Rangers will play to one more regular season contest now when they head to South Dakota Wednesday for a matchup with Black Hills State University. Game time is set for 5 PM at the Black Hills Power Sports Complex.
