DENVER, Colo. – The Regis University Women's Soccer team, who were receiving votes in the most recent IWSOC Top 25 Coaches Poll, shutout the University of Colorado Colorado Springs, 2-0, on Sunday afternoon at the Regis Turf Fields. The Rangers improve to 10-2-0 (6-0-0 RMAC), while the Mountain Lions fall to 8-3-1 (4-2-0 RMAC).
HOW IT HAPPENED
UCCS would control the time of possession to start the match, before Elsa Nolen took the first Regis shot in the 15th minute. Maggie Payne saved the first Mountain Lion shot on goal, and the Rangers turned their counter. Paula Igual intercepted a pass, and put it ahead to Brooke Castillo, who won a foot race and scored, butting the ball in the bottom left corner. Each team would only manage one more SOG for the remainder of the half, and both were saved.
Both teams came out of the break with intent, as they both landed a shot on target within the first three minutes. Payne continued to hold stout in the goal, saving two more attempts before Madisyn Myers, who had entered the game five minutes prior, passed back to Fernanda Rodriguez, and the league's goals leader finished for the 2-0 lead. UCCS kept the pressure on for the last 20 minutes, taking six more shots, with one on goal, but the Ranger defense held for the win.
