DENVER, Colo. – Matt Lautz has officially been named the 14th Head Coach of the Regis Rangers Baseball team, Associate Vice President / Director of Athletics & Strategic Partnership Tommy Gilhooly announced on Thursday.
"We could not be more blessed to have Matt as our next head coach," said Gilhooly. "From being a Graduate Assistant to Assistant Coach, to now the Head Coach, we are excited for the program's future. In this department, we pride ourselves on growing people, and more importantly, to my mind, if you serve Regis at a high level, you are good enough to lead Regis when the opportunity comes. Matt has demonstrated everything we require to help us develop great young men in service of others on the platform of baseball. I'm excited for Matt, for the team, and I can't wait for them to go after a conference championship together. Let's Go Shovel Boys!"
Lautz joined the Rangers in June of 2021 as a Graduate Assistant Coach and was promoted to Assistant Baseball Coach in 2024.
"I'm incredibly honored and excited to be named the next Head Baseball Coach at Regis University," said Lautz. "This program has been home to me for the past five years, and I'm grateful for the opportunity to lead it."
Since Lautz joined the coaching staff, the Rangers have put together multiple historic seasons. RU won a program record 35 wins in 2025, earned an NCAA Tournament berth in 2024, and have had multiple top-10 season marks in batting average, slugging percentage, on-base percentage, runs scored, hits, doubles, triples, home runs, total bases, walks, hit by pitches, sacrifice flies, and stolen bases, lowest opponent batting average, strikeouts per nine innings, and saves.
"I'm thankful to the administration for their belief in me and for everyone who has invested in my growth along the way," Lautz added. "I understand the responsibility that comes with this position, and I'm committed to upholding the standard that's already been established while elevating this program to new heights."
Working primarily with Regis pitchers and as the program's Recruiting Coordinator, Lautz played an integral role in the careers of Adam Paniagua, the 2025 Perfect Game Baseball Player of the Year and Colorado Sports Hall of Fame Male Collegiate Athlete of the Year, Aidan Brainard (drafted by the Rangers in 2026), Zach Daudet (Astros, 2025), and Ethan Sloan (Tigers, 2024).
"Our focus will be on continuing the Regis Baseball tradition of developing young men of character, competing for championships, and building a culture that our players, alumni, and community can be proud of. I'm excited to get to work," concluded Lautz.
Prior to Regis, Lautz played baseball at Santa Barbara City College from 2016-2018 before transferring to Concordia University Irvine in Irvine, CA for the 2019 and 2021 seasons. He finished his Concordia University Irvine playing career with a .343 batting average and a .448 on-base percentage.
In 2021, he was recognized as among the best NCAA DII players in the West Region by the American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA) with First Team All-Region honors. He was also named First Team All-Region by the Division Two Conference Commissioners Association (D2CCA).
Lautz begins his duties as Head Coach immediately.
