GOLDEN, Colo. – The Regis University women's soccer team continued their hot start to conference play this afternoon as they defeated the Colorado School of Mines 2-1 at Stermole Soccer Stadium.
The victory was the Rangers' seventh in a row with them also staying perfect in RMAC play so far at 4-0. Regis is 8-2 overall while remaining in tie for first place of the conference standings with Colorado Mesa.
In addition, the victory served as Head Coach Jeff Frykholm's 50th win of his coaching career with all of them taking place at Regis University.
The Rangers' win over the Orediggers' was their first loss since their first match of the season against Rollins College as they currently sit 5-2-2 overall now while owning an even 1-1-1 record in the RMAC.
Mines was receiving votes in this week's Intercollegiate Women's Soccer Organization of Coaches (IWSOC) Poll as well while beginning this year as the No. 12 team in the nation.
Regis recorded goals in both halves of today's match with the score being tied at one apiece at half before the eventual game-winner came in the 59th minute.
Fernanda Rodriguez first got the Rangers on the board in the 29th minute with her being able to find the net on a curving shot to the left side post that initially was stopped by the Mines' goalkeeper before slipping off her hands and just barely breaking the goal plane.
Her score allowed for an early lead but that would only last for roughly 13 minutes as the Orediggers made it even in the 42nd minute when they converted on a corner kick that was headed in by Natalie Rouse.
At half, Mines owned the 8-4 shot advantage but defense instead limited both teams heavily.
Through 13 minutes the second half looked to be another defensive showing, but it was finally in the 59th minute that Regis broke the stalemate with Rodriguez scoring again on a long range shot to the upper right side of the net.
She was assisted by Brooke Castillo on the score with Castillo now having back-to-back games with assists.
Rodriguez's goal was also her 10th of the season with her now tied for the league-lead in total goals. She leads the game-winning goals category with four.
The Orediggers challenged with seven shots through the final 31 minutes of play but couldn't convert as they were taken down on their home field.
Overall, Mines outshot Regis 20-7 but stellar play in the net from Maggie Payne led to her recording a new career-high 10 saves while limiting the high octane offense from the Orediggers.
Regis has now won back-to-back matches against Mines in the last two years, both being 2-1 decisions.
