Markel is a 2019 graduate of Summit High School in Frisco, Colorado. She earned four letters in women's lacrosse. During her career, Markel was named All-State Second Team and Academic All-State as a junior and senior.

Markel is the daughter of Maria and Roger Markel and has one sister, Hanna. Her main reason for choosing Regis was because, "the mission that Regis has being a Jesuit school and basis for community".
