Box Score DENVER, Colo. – The Regis University volleyball team extended their win streak to six defeating the Adams State Grizzlies (9-9, 4-5 RMAC) in straight sets, Friday night.
The Rangers came out strong jumping to a 5-2 early first set lead. The Grizzlies fought back coming within one, 11-10, but RU would respond putting distance back into the lead. Regis held a 19-15 lead with sights on the first set victory when Adams State tallied three straight, 19-18. The Grizzlies would come within one four more times before the first set came to a close but the Rangers were able to pull away one last time for the 25-23 win.
ASU went point-for-point with Regis at the start of the second set but seven straight points for the home team gave a comfortable 11-5 lead. Consistent with the first set, the Grizzlies did not back down as they began etching away at the deficit.
The set of runs continued as each team exchanged momentum shifts. The visitors rallied off five straight of their own cutting the lead down to 12-10. The Rangers quickly regained controljust in time for Adams State to rattle off another 7-1 run to tie the score at 19-19. RU was able to postpone the comeback to go up 2-0 with the 25-22 second set win.
Although being down two sets, the Grizzlies did not back down. A 4-1 Regis lead was quickly diminished and overcome by Adams State for just the second time in the match, ASU controlled an 8-5 lead. Four straight points gave the Rangers a slight 9-8 lead and while the Grizzlies continued to battle. RU ultimately came out on top dropping five in a row to seal the 25-22 third set win.
Maggie Steward and
Katie Klein led Regis with 11 kills apiece and both hitting at a clip of .286. Steward also added four block assists and six digs to her stat line while Klein added two block assists.
The Rangers dominated in their coverage at the net tonight out-blocking the Grizzlies 12-6.
Kristen Hornung led the charge recording a career-high six blocks, two of which were solo, to shut down the Grizzlies attackers holding them to a .155 hitting percentage. Hornung also matched her career-high four kills while
Diamond Ridley-Pierce chipped in with three blocks of her own.
Regis is back on their home court Saturday, October 15 at 5 p.m. against the Fort Lewis Skyhawks (4-13, 3-6 RMAC).
