Box Score DENVER, Colo. – The Regis University volleyball team fell in a Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference mid-week clash 3-1 to cross-town rival No. 23 Metropolitan State University of Denver Roadrunners (16-3, 11-0 RMAC). The Rangers took an early match lead, 1-0, battling throughout each set but ultimately succumbed to the Roadrunners.
MSU Denver held an early 4-1 lead over Regis at the start of the first set but the Rangers fought their way back overcoming the deficit. RU ignited part way through the set rallying off nine-straight points with no answer from the Roadrunners. That lead was enough to hold throughout the remainder of the first set as Regis went ahead 1-0 with the 25-21 victory.
Play at the beginning of the second set was a back-and-forth affair until a small hot streak of three for Regis provided some distance, 10-6. The Rangers kept the Roadrunners attack at bay to force a timeout while holding a 19-13 lead.
MSU Denver fought to tie the score at 22-22 but RU responded to the challenge. Neither team letting the other out of their sight as the score would tie seven more times as Regis fought off a Roadrunners set point five times, ultimately falling 30-32.
The Roadrunners remained hot at the start of the third set putting the Rangers behind 6-2. Regis could not gain any momentum to rally off a comeback until seven-straight late in the set put RU ahead 24-23. The Rangers were unable to finish off the third set as the Roadrunners battled to extend play again with MSU Denver coming out with the 28-26 win.
Consistent with the play throughout the match, both teams exchanged point-for-point until MSU Denver was able to slightly pull away at 14-12 to force an RU timeout. The visitors then pulled too far away at 22-14 for Regis to mount another comeback as the Roadrunners earned the 25-18 win.
Regis was led offensively by
Kelsey Green with 12 kills and a .267 hitting percentage.
Maggie Steward and
Katie Klein each added ten kills apiece and combined for 17 digs. Defensively,
Diamond Ridley-Pierce and
Cedar Bellows recorded four blocks apiece, each tallying two solo.
The Rangers win streak comes to a close as they move to an overall record of 12-8 and 7-4 in the RMAC. Regis travels to CSU-Pueblo (7-12, 5-5 RMAC) on Friday, October 21 for a 7 p.m. match time.
