Volleyball rolls over New Mexico Highlands

Box Score LAS VEGAS, N.M. – The Regis University volleyball team earned back-to-back road wins rolling over the New Mexico Highlands Cowgirls in a 3-0 sweep. The Rangers improve to 14-8 overall and 9-4 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference.

Regis held the Cowgirls to a .148 hitting percentage putting down 52 kills to just 27 while not allowing any of the Highlands hitters to tally any more than five kills. The first set was most efficient for RU recording a .406 hitting percentage but it was the third set in which they exploded with 19 kills.

The Cowgirls held a slight lead over the Rangers at the start of the first set. Regis would eventually take over a 10-9 lead and hold onto it for the remainder of the set only allowing Highlands to score six more points, 25-15.

The Rangers opened the second set with five straight and continued with the breakdown of the Cowgirls defense. Regis cruised to a 25-16 second set win to go ahead 2-0 in the match.

Highlands, again, scored the first points of the third set but it did not last long as RU produced an 8-2 run to lead 8-4 and ultimately for the remainder of the match. Holding the Cowgirls to their lowest point-total of the match, Regis eased to a 25-13 third set win.

"We had our most balanced offensive match of the season with great numbers from our middles," said head coach Frank Lavrisha. Cedar Bellows and Yagoda Jedrzejczak combined for 11 kills hitting at clips of .556 and .455, respectively. That same middle duo was strong on the defensive side of the ball as well as Bellows had two block solos and Jedrzejczak went down in the books for five block assists.

"The ball control was solid and our setters, Jac and Gabby, were captaining the offense to a high degree," Lavrisha said. Kelsey Green led the Rangers with an efficient offensive production of 14 kills and a .571 hitting percentage. Katie Klein added ten kills and two blocks while Maggie Steward chipped in with nine kills and nine digs.

Regis remains on the road for a pair of matches in the Denver area at Colorado Christian and Colorado Mines on Friday, October 28 at 6 p.m. and Saturday, October 29 at 5 p.m.
