Career night from Ridley-Pierce lifts RU over Black Hills State

Box Score SPEARFISH, S.D. – After a five-game home stretch, the Regis University volleyball team traveled 400 miles north to take on the Black Hills State Yellow Jackets. The Rangers overcame the Yellow Jackets 3-2 to move to an overall record of 9-7 and 4-3 in the league.

Regis jumped out to an early first set lead of 7-4 but the Yellow Jackets began to rally back evening the score out at 10-10. The Rangers extended the lead back to 15-11 and controlled the momentum until Black Hills State stole the first set out from underneath RU 25-23.

The second set started off with both teams exchanging control, neither allowing one or the other to gain too much momentum. The score tied 15 times throughout the set as the Rangers sat at set point, 24-21, but BHSU rattled off three straight to tie the score at 24-24. The Yellow Jackets tried to go up 2-0 in the match but Regis managed to squeeze out the second set as Diamond Ridley-Pierce came alive with four the Rangers points to lift RU to a 30-28 win.

The third set took a similar form to that of the second as both teams exchanged point-for-point. In another conference clash, the score would tie 11 times in the third set as the Rangers prevailed in with the 25-23 win to take an overall 2-1 match lead.

Black Hills State took a lead early in the fourth set and never let go of it. The Yellow Jackets pushed the match to the fifth set with the 25-20 fourth set win. In the second straight fifth set match of the season, third overall, the Rangers toppled BHSU 15-10 to earn their fourth straight win. "That was a gut-check, team win," said head coach Frank Lavrisha. "Diamond's career kill total got us to extend the match and Maggie's hitting and blocking was the difference in the 5th set."

Ridley-Pierce had a career-night shattering her previous high of 13 kills putting down 19 while hitting at a clip of .350. She added one block to finish with 19.5 points for RU. Kelsey Green added 14 kills on 38 attempts for a .237 hitting percentage. Katie Klein produced her third double-double of the season recording 13 kills and 16 digs while adding two service aces. Maggie Steward chipped in with a team-high 19 digs while Drew Rhamy tallied career-high three service aces.

"We have great leadership from Katie and Maggie. Black Hills played extremely well, I tip my hat to their effort and competitiveness," added Lavrisha.

The Rangers remain on the road at South Dakota Mines Saturday, October 8 at 7 p.m.
