Volleyball earns fifth-straight win, Klein matches career-high

Box Score RAPID CITY, S.D. – The Regis University volleyball team captured their fifth straight win to close out the road weekend with a strong 3-1 victory over the South Dakota School of Mines Hardrockers (1-18, 0-8 RMAC). "Our team is gelling as we go through the conference season," said head coach Frank Lavrisha. "The Rangers were solid with our serve and pass game to take the match." RU improved to an overall record of 10-7 and 5-3 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference.

Although South Dakota Mines managed to hang with Regis early in the first set, seven-straight points extended the Rangers lead for good, 14-8. RU never relinquished control rolling to a 25-14 win.

Regis started the second set with the same power and consistency as the first. The Rangers held a 14-8 lead over the Hardrockers as the second set continued to follow suit of the first until the home team surged. RU used a timeout after five-straight South Dakota Mines points, 15-10, in an attempt to throw off their rhythm.

The Hardrockers were not fazed by the timeout and continued with their run to come within two, 18-16. Regis could not slow down the attack as the score tied twice in the final points of the set. The Rangers found their rhythm at that right time to go ahead 2-0 in the match with the 25-22 second set win.

Regis weakened in the third set as South Dakota Mines saw their first lead of the match, 5-4, but RU quickly rebounded taking back control, 16-12. The Hardrockers pulsed late to battle from behind and eventually tie the score at 22-22 and again at 23-23. South Dakota Mines ultimately squeezed out the last two points, 25-23, to extend the match.

The Hardrockers came alive building on their third set victory battling point-for-point with RU but the Rangers squandered another late comeback to pull out the 25-22 fourth set win.

Regis dominated the attack outhitting the Hardrockers 63-39. RU was led by Katie Klein matching her career-high 23 kills on 49 attempts for a .327 hitting percentage. Maggie Steward and Kristen Hornung added eight kills apiece.

Ranger defense at the net was led by Cedar Bellows tallying four blocks while also adding a team-high two service aces. Drew Rhamy set a new career mark leading the team with 18 digs and Jac Williamson assisted on a season-high 30 kills. "Jac did a nice job setting today and Katie found her scoring groove," Lavrisha added.

RU will return home hosting Adams State on Friday, October 14 and Fort Lewis on Saturday, October 15. Match times are set for 7 p.m. and 5 p.m.
