Box Score LUBBOCK, Tex. - The Regis University men's basketball team (1-0) opened their regular season against the Lubbock Christian University Chaparrals (0-1) on Friday night earning the victory over a team that beat them in the first game of the season last year.
Regis got revenge as they beat LCU 80-78 behind a career performance from sophomore
Ryan Beisty. The game started off with the Chaps scoring four quick points, but the Rangers answered back with a three-point bomb from Beisty, one of eight on the night.
RU took their first lead of the game, 19-18, at the nine-minute mark of the first half as junior
Dexter Sienko knocked down a jumpshot. Ten straight points from Regis gave them a nine-point lead, 30-21, with six minutes to go.
Before the half ended, the Rangers extended their lead to 11 points when they led 34-23 but LCU fought back and gained a little traction as the teams headed to the locker rooms with the score at 46-38 in favor of RU.
At halftime, Beisty had already collected 20 points on the night going 7-9 from the field including 6-8 from beyond the arc. Junior
Kevin Metoyer was locking down the point guard position dishing out assists left and right as he tallied six assists in only 12 minutes in the first half.
Opening the second half of play, the lead ballooned to 14 points for Regis as they took a 60-46 lead after a made layup from freshman
Christian Little. From that point on the Chaps fought back and with only three minutes left in regulation, they took a 74-72 lead.
Back to back jumpers from Sienko put the Rangers up 76-74 with one minute and 30 seconds remaining in the game. A defensive stop on the other end for RU forced LCU to foul, resulting in free throws for the visitors. Metoyer knocked down both shots to put the team up four points, and Regis went back on defense.
Brennan Fowler of the Chaps netted a jumpshot with 11 seconds remaining and LCU fouled once more. Metoyer stepped to the line again and drained both shots essentially putting the game away with seven seconds to go. One last jumpshot from the Chaps at the buzzer brought them within two, but the game was over and the Rangers had won.
Beisty, the big man from down-under, finished with a career-high 26 points on 9-12 shooting, including eight three-pointers. Sienko notched 19 points and six rebounds, Metoyer chipped in with ten points and eight assists, and Little had 12 points. Redshirt-junior
Troy Anderson II scored four points but he tracked down a team-high eight rebounds.
As a team RU shot 23-51 from the field (45.1 percent), 11-22 from three-point land (50 percent) and converted 23 of 31 free throw attempts. Defensively, Regis had nine steals on the night with Anderson and senior
Noah King each picking up three, respectively.
Up next for the men's basketball team is a matchup with the St. Mary's University Rattlers (0-1) in the second game of the RMAC/Heartland Challenge tomorrow night, Saturday, November 12 at 5 p.m.
