Rangers topple Colorado Mesa to close out regular season

Box Score GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – The Regis University volleyball team closed out their final regular season match toppling the Colorado Mesa Mavericks in three. "We were well-prepared and executed our game plan effectively," said head coach Frank Lavrisha. The last time Regis swept the Mavericks was back in 2010 and the last time they did it on the road was in 2008.

The score was tight throughout the entirety of the first set. The Rangers controlled the lead at the 13-12 mark on a kill from Katie Klein. The Mavericks hung around but Klein got RU to set point with another kill and an attack error by CMU gave Regis the 25-20 first set win.

The offense was firing on all cylinders as Regis produced its most efficient set hitting at a clip of .321. The Rangers jumped out to an early 5-2 lead but Colorado Mesa responded in an attempt to keep it close. That did not last long as RU began to slowly pull away. Mavericks timeouts were called at 10-6 and 17-9 but Regis was not phased cruising to a 25-15 second set win.

With the Rangers up 2-0 on the match, Colorado Mesa regrouped at the break to turn a much more competitive third set. The score tied 10 times as both teams took turns exchanging points. RU rallied off four-straight points to take a 20-15 lead. CMU responded with four of their own to tie the score at 21-21.

The score would lock one final time at 23-23 before another kill from Klein put the Rangers at match-point. Another Mavericks attack error allowed RU to complete the sweep. Klein led both teams with 12 kills and a .259 attack percentage. Kelsey Green chipped in with eight kills while Maggie Steward added seven of her own and six digs.

Jac Williamson dished up 21 assists and added seven digs while Gabby Haugh tallied 10 assists of her own. "Kudos to the setters, Jac and Gabby, for orchestrating the offense," Lavrisha said. Cedar Bellows recorded three blocks on the night, one of which was solo. "Our passing allowed us to run offense and we were solid defensively," Lavrisha added. "Katie led us offensively and we got contributions from all positions. It was a great team win for the Rangers."

RU await seeding of the upcoming Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference tournament. Quarterfinal matches will be Tuesday, November 15 hosted by the higher seed. Match times are not yet set.
