Rangers resilient in 58-54 win over Newman

Box Score WICHITA, Kan. – Despite the struggle from shooting beyond the arc, the Regis University women's basketball team battled from the tip to the final whistle to defeat the Newman University Jets 58-54. The Rangers sought revenge of the Jets losing to them last season.

The score tied four times and the lead exchanged hands twice throughout the first quarter as the Jets held a slight 15-14 lead. However, both teams experienced a scoring lull in the second quarter. A field-goal from Kaylie Rader gave RU a 20-18 lead with just under eight minutes to play before the break.

Then, three minutes ran off the clock slowing down both teams as each struggled to score. Karlyn Johnson broke the silence and gave Regis a 22-18 lead. Another two minutes ran off before another Rader field-goal pushed the RU lead to 24-18. The Jets closed out the quarter with a 7-2 run to hold a slight 26-25 lead at halftime.

The same back-and-forth from the first half carried over into the second. The lead changed four times in the final three minutes of the third quarter, neither team able to dominate offensively. The Jets held a small 40-39 lead heading into the final quarter of play.

The Rangers went to work in the fourth quarter producing the highest point total of 19 by either team. Rader faced up on the baseline sinking one from 15 feet to bring Regis within one, 47-46. Mary Sigler followed that up draining one from distance to shift the lead back to Regis, 49-47. Sigler then put up a three-point play making a layup and drawing the foul. She gave RU the largest lead of the game by either team at 52-47 with just over two minutes to play.

The Sigler show continued with 30 seconds remaining. Majestie Robinson shook her defender, drew the help and dished it out to Sigler whose defender left just enough time for her to get the shot off to drain another three. Possession favored RU when the Jets applied full court pressure forcing a jump ball with 16 seconds left.

Sigler made it a three-point game, 57-54, missing the front end of a double bonus attempt. Johnson then secured the defensive rebound as Newman came down the court and missed a layup. The Jets were forced to foul and Johnson went 1-for-2 at the line to make it a two possession game. Regis held off Newman to improve to 2-0 overall on the season.

Regis shot 42.6 percent from the field while dominating on the glass outrebounding Newman 41-26. Sigler put up a career-high 19 points on 6-of-10 from the field, 2-of-4 from distance and 5-of-7 from the line. Rader also notched 19 points of her own to record her first double-double of the season pulling down 13 boards.

Sigler and Rader were named to the Heartland/RMAC Challenge All-Tournament team for their dominating performances throughout both wins this weekend.

Regis will return home to face Nebraska-Kearney on Friday, November 18 at 5 p.m.
