Rangers off to best start since 2007-08 season

Box Score DENVER, Colo. – On Wednesday night, the Regis University men's basketball team (3-0) welcomed the Johnson and Wales University Wildcats (3-6) to the Regis Fieldhouse for a non-conference matchup. Regis cruised to a 90-64 win on a night that saw five Rangers score in double-figures, improving to 3-0 and their best start since the 2007-08 season.

It was the defense that put RU in full control of the game as they limited the Wildcats to only 27 points in the first half. Redshirt-junior Troy Anderson II had two blocks that pumped up the crowd and the defense for the home team. Senior Elijah Sanders was on fire in the opening period as he went off for nine points on 4-6 shooting.

Regis chalked up 44 points in the first half and they carried that momentum all the way through the second half. Junior Dexter Sienko put the Rangers up 24 points, 57-33, as he flew through the lane and threw down a monster dunk four minutes into the second half.

RU never let off the gas as they consistently held a 20-point lead throughout the remainder of the game. A fastbreak layup by freshman Christian Little with twelve minutes gave the home team a 65-42 lead.

Redshirt-freshmen Taffy Tela, who nailed a three-pointer, and Elias Haile who converted a layup extended the lead to 26 points, 87-61, with two minutes to go in the game. Junior Roberto Reyes gave Regis their largest lead of the game 90-62 late in the second half, and the Rangers held on for the 90-64 win.

The home team shot 55.2 percent from the floor (32-58) including 50 percent (7-14) from beyond the arc. RU won the rebound battle 40-29, and they held the visitors to only 38.6 percent shooting overall.

Sienko was the high-point man as he scored 14 points, also tracking down a game-high nine rebounds. Sanders (13 points), Beisty (12 points), Anderson II (10 points), and Tela (10 points) were the other players who scored in double-figures on the night.

Up next for the men's basketball team will be a game against Colorado College on Monday, November 21 at 7 p.m. followed by back to back games with Bloomfield College on Friday, November 25 at 7 p.m., and Davis and Elkins College on Saturday, November 26 at 5 p.m. Each of these matchups will be at the Regis Fieldhouse.
