Box Score DENVER, Colo. – The Regis University men's basketball team is off to their best start in 16 years and on Monday night they extended that unbeaten streak. Regis is now 4-0 which marks their best start since the 2000-01 season after a 88-79 win over Colorado College (0-3).
The Rangers came out slow at the start of the game as the Tigers opened to a 10-2 lead. RU responded with a 7-2 run cutting the deficit to 12-9. Midway through the first half the Tigers continued to control a 27-17 lead over the Rangers.
The deficit remained at ten, 35-25, with just under five minutes to play before the break as Regis went to work. A 9-3 run from RU put them right back into the game. Five of
Kevin Metoyer's 24 points came in the final seconds of the first half. A three-pointer and a pair of free throws from Metoyer brought the Rangers within one, 42-41, at halftime.
Regis opened the second half taking control of their first lead of the game on back-to-back field goals from
Dexter Sienko and Troy Anderson. The following minutes were a battle back-and-forth, just as the remainder of the game would unfold. RU held their largest lead of the game thus far on a Metoyer field goal, 59-53, with 12 and a half minutes to play.
The Tigers quickly brought the score back to a tie, 59-59, dropping six unanswered points but the Rangers fought right back. Regis controlled a 77-68 lead with just under four minutes to go as they slowed down the pace working for each shot.
RU held off the Tigers in the final minutes of the game to earn their fourth win of the season and stay undefeated. The Rangers were led by Metoyer who went for 24 on 7-of-14 from the field and 9-of-10 from the line. He also chipped in with nine assists, leaving him one assist shy of a double-double.
Sienko recorded his fourth-straight game of double-digit production scoring 17 on the night and adding seven rebounds.
Elijah Sanders chipped in with ten points of his own going 5-of-6 from the field.
The men's basketball team will return to the Regis Fieldhouse later this week to battle Bloomfield College (2-1) on Friday, November 25 at 7 p.m. The next night, Saturday, November 26, the team will go head to head with Davis and Elkins College (0-3) at 5 p.m.
