Box Score DENVER, Colo. - After picking up their fifth straight win to open the season, the Regis University men's basketball team matched up with the Davis and Elkins College Senators (0-6) on Saturday night. Regis (6-0) extended their winning streak to six games with an 80-75 victory over the Senators.
Much like their last game, the Rangers jumped out to an early 7-2 lead after two minutes of play but then allowed D&E to claw back and take a six-point lead with 13 minutes to go in the first half.
After fighting back RU trailed by only two points, thanks to 11 second chance points, with under a minute to play in the opening period. The Senators made two free throws with 42 seconds left and took a 34-30 lead into halftime.
In only his second game back from injury, sophomore
Jarrett Brodbeck put up 11 points in the first half on 4-of-9 shooting from the field, including three baskets from beyond the arc.
Two minutes into the second half, redshirt-junior
Troy Anderson II took a pass from junior
Kevin Metoyer and hammered home a dunk to break a 36-36 tie to give Regis their first lead of the half.
It was the spark from Anderson's dunk that ignited the crowd and the team. A couple minutes later, Brodbeck splashed home another three-pointer to put the home team up seven points, 44-37.
The Ranger defense hung tight and forced important turnovers in key points in the game. As the teams went back and forth, they found themselves tied at 71 points with a little more than one minute to go in regulation. Sophomore
Ryan Beisty came through in clutch time as he knocked down a three-pointer to give RU a 74-71 lead with only 45 seconds on the clock.
Two free throws on the next possession brought D&E within a single point at 74-73, but Beisty came up huge again as he splashed another big-time three with 22 seconds left. Regis forced a turnover, Brodbeck and Metoyer made their free throws late in the game, and the Rangers came away with the 80-75 win over the Senators.
Brodbeck cruised to 21 points to lead the team, with junior
Dexter Sienko adding 14 and a team-high nine rebounds, and Metoyer and Anderson II chipping in with 11 points apiece. Anderson II finished with three blocks on the night behind a great defensive effort from the forward, and Metoyer picked up five assists.
Up next for the men's team is the beginning of the conference schedule. Their first game will be a game against Colorado Christian University (3-2) on Friday, December 2 at 7 p.m. followed by an early season battle against Colorado Mines (5-1) on Saturday, December 3 also at 7 p.m.
