RU drops exhibition game to Iowa, four in double-digits

Box Score IOWA CITY, Iowa – The Regis University men's basketball team faced a big-time opponent in the University of Iowa Hawkeyes battling until the final whistle in the 95-73 exhibition loss. The team showed heart and determination in their opening test of the season.

The Rangers experienced a slow start in the first half unable to defensively slow down Peter Jok and the Hawkeyes. Regis actually saw nine more field-goal attempts in the first half but could not convert from the floor. RU headed into halftime facing a 51-31 deficit.

The scoring production came alive in the second half as the Rangers dropped 15-of-30 from the field and shot 33.3 percent from distance. Regis clawed their way back from a 24-point deficit early at the start of the second half. A 15-1 run and a near four-minute scoring drought from Iowa brought RU within ten, 64-54.

A jumper by Troy Anderson with just under ten minutes to play brought the Hawkeye lead to single digits, 67-58. An 11-0 run by Iowa quickly extended the lead back to 20, 80-60. The Rangers kept fighting but were unable to hold off an efficient Iowa offense.

In the second half alone, RU was slightly outscored 44-42. Regis had four players reach double-digit scoring led by Dexter Sienko and Kevin Metoyer with 16 apiece. Metoyer went 6-of-12 from the field with Sienko going 5-of-8 from the field and 5-for-6 from the line.

Noah King led the charge on the boards with nine, including three offensive, finishing the game just shy of a double-double with ten points. Kon Anguik added ten points of his own off the bench for RU on 4-of-7 from the field and 2-of-3 from beyond the arc.

The Hawkeyes slightly outrebounded the Rangers 41-38 but Regis chased down 15 offensive boards to Iowa's 11. Iowa was able to capitalize scoring 28 points off 20 RU turnovers but the Rangers saw 28 points inside the paint and 26 from their bench.

Regis will face Colorado State University in another exhibition game before beginning the regular season. The game against CSU is on Tuesday, November 8 at 7 p.m. in Fort Collins, Colo.
