Volleyball drops five-set heartbreaker, Klein breaks record

Box Score SAN ANGELO, Tex. – The No. 6 Regis University volleyball dropped a heartbreaking five-set battle to the No. 3 Tarleton State Texanns as the 2016 season comes to a close. The Rangers went ahead two sets to none early in the match but the Texanns fought back from the deficit to ultimately capture the win and advance in the NCAA Division II South Central Regional.

Regis went ahead early in the first set 6-1 continuing on to extend their lead to 13-6 after five straight points. The Texanns hung around but the Rangers took a 1-0 match lead with the 25-22 first set win.

RU remained in-sync at the start of the second set jumping out to a 6-2 lead. Tarleton State quickly responded evening the score up at 7-7 and taking their first lead of the match at 10-8. Momentum would exchange hands until six-straight Regis points late in the set gave them a 23-18 lead. The Rangers closed out the second set with a 25-21 victory.

The third set was much like the first two until the Texanns held their largest lead of the match thus far at 14-10. The remainder of the set was one of back-and-forth runs. RU scored five unanswered points to take a 16-15 lead but Tarleton followed that up with four-straight.

A Regis timeout at 19-16 slowed down the Texanns enough for the Rangers to respond with four-straight of their own and take back control of the lead, 20-19. A couple of unforced errors late in the set allowed Tarleton to barely hang on and grab a third set 27-25 win.

The Rangers regrouped and held a 15-11 lead in the fourth set but the Texanns went to work again. RU forced a timeout holding Tarleton at set point for three-straight points. The Texanns closed out the fourth set and evened the match up at 2-2 with a 25-23 win.

The momentum Tarleton finished the fourth set with carried over into the fifth set as they came out to an early 3-0 lead. The Rangers battled but could not muster up another comeback dropping the fifth set 15-11.

Katie Klein led Regis offensively recording 18 kills. In the first set, Klein tied and then broke the Regis volleyball program's all-time career kills record. The record-breaking kill came as the Rangers took a 17-14 lead.

Kelsey Green added 17 kills and a .269 hitting percentage while assisting on one block. Diamond Ridley-Pierce chipped in with ten kills and six blocks. Jac Williamson dished out 31 assists and recorded seven digs while Maggie Steward tallied 27 digs.

The Rangers close out the 2016 season with an overall mark of 18-12.
