Box Score DENVER, Colo. - The Regis University men's basketball team finally got over the hump they have been climbing all season to earn their first conference victory of the year, beating the UC-Colorado Springs Mountain Lions (3-6, 2-2 RMAC) 82-74 on Saturday night. Regis improved to 7-3 overall and 1-3 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference with the victory.
Junior
Kevin Metoyer was the star of the first half as he broke out for 12 points on 5-of-9 shooting from the field (2-2 3FG) while also dishing out two assists. The Rangers opened the game with a 14-4 run to set the tone early, and to let UCCS know they were ready to play.
With nine minutes left in the opening half, the Mountain Lions clawed their way back to take a 24-23 lead, but RU continued to play their game and found themselves ahead 41-35 after a jumper from senior
Noah King fell with one minute left in the first half. Sophomore
Ryan Beisty knocked down a shot from beyond the arc as time expired to send the home team into halftime with a 44-39 advantage.
Sophomore
Jarrett Brodbeck stepped up huge with 17 points to help guide Regis in the second half. Six minutes into the second half, Metoyer drove the lane, laid the ball off the glass and knocked down a free throw to convert the and-one play, giving the Rangers a 61-52 lead.
With the clock ticking down junior
Dexter Sienko put a shot up and in giving RU a 80-72 lead with only one minute to go. Regis closed out the game with free throws and earned the 82-74 win.
Brodbeck knocked down five of his seven three-point attempts in the second half which carried the team through an up-and-down second half. Despite being outrebounded 45-36, the Rangers held it together thanks to a 20-point performance from Sienko, who also grabbed eight boards. Brodbeck followed with 17 points, with Metoyer and redshirt
Troy Anderson II chipping in with 15 and 10, respectively.
The men's basketball team will play two games next weekend, the first will be a matchup with Black Hills State University (4-6, 1-3 RMAC) on Friday, December 16 at 7 p.m., followed by a game against South Dakota School of Mines and Technology (6-4, 2-2 RMAC) on Saturday at 5:30 p.m. After that, the team will enjoy Christmas Break and return to action on December 31 at home against Fort Lewis College (9-1, 4-0 RMAC) at 7 p.m.
