Box Score DENVER, Colo. – The Regis University men's basketball team collided with their cross-town rival Metropolitan State University-Denver Roadrunners (6-2, 2-0 RMAC) in one of the most competitive and highly contested games in recent memory. Regis (6-3, 0-3 RMAC) lost the game on a shot in the final seconds 72-70.
The Rangers got off to a terrific start in the first half shooting 50 percent from the field and building up a 41-29 lead after 20 minutes of play. Junior
Dexter Sienko led the way with 12 points on 5-of-7 shooting in 15 minutes on the court.
It was the second half that bolstered a great deal of the excitement as sophomore
Jarrett Brodbeck gave RU their biggest lead of the game with a jumpshot in the paint. It was after that made basket that MSU-Denver began to chip away at the lead.
Fueled by an 8-0 run, the Roadrunners were within single-digits 37-43 with 16 minutes to go in the second half. A three-pointer, a steal and two made free throws later, the game was deadlocked at 56 points apiece.
Another steal and layup for the visitors gave them their first lead since the seven-minute mark in the first half. MSU-Denver extended their lead to five points at 65-60, but a mini comeback from the Rangers capped off by a three-pointer from redshirt-junior
Troy Anderson II to knot the game at 70 points apiece with 27 seconds left on the clock.
The Roadrunners held possession of the ball and they dribbled down court and the RU defense forced Peter Moller into a very difficult off-balance shot that fell short of the rim with five seconds on the clock, but the shot fell right into a jumping Andre Harris' hands who threw up a shot that fell through the hoop putting the visitor's up by two points as the game came to an end.
Sienko finished with a team-high 18 points and nine rebounds, Metoyer followed with 14 points and added a team-high five assists. MSU-Denver used their 16 points off turnovers in the second half, and a 38-33 rebounding advantage to fight their way back and ultimately win the game.
With little time to rest and relax, the men's basketball team will be back in action tomorrow, Saturday December 10 to face-off with the Mountain Lions of UC-Colorado Springs (3-5, 2-1 RMAC) at 7 p.m. in the Regis Fieldhouse.
