Box Score SPEARFISH, S.D. – While most students are home for winter break, the men's basketball team remained in action as they made the trip to Black Hills State University to face the Yellow Jackets (4-7, 1-4 RMAC) on Friday night. Regis (8-3, 2-3 RMAC) pulled out the win 57-56 late to earn their second straight conference win.
Senior guard
Noah King (4-7 FG, 3-5 3-pt) led the way with 11 points and freshman guard
Christian Little (5-6 FG) followed with 10 points to help RU to a one-point win over BHSU on Friday night. Sienko added eight points, six rebounds and a season-high four blocks on the defensive end.
How It Happened: Despite leading the game for only two minutes and 30 seconds, Regis found a way to pull ahead and complete the win late in the game. The Yellow Jackets held the lead for nearly 92 percent of the game as the Rangers took their first lead of the game with three minutes and 16 seconds left on the clock in the second half.
It was a deep three-point jumper from sophomore
Jarrett Brodbeck who gave the team their first lead at 54-53. Rebounding, and more specifically offensive rebounding kept RU within striking distance. Regis held a commanding 36-25 advantage on the boards with a staggering 17 rebounds coming on the offensive end.
Right after Brodbeck gave the Rangers their first lead, three straight free throws from the home team gave BHSU a two-point advantage 56-54 with two minutes and 22 seconds remaining. King stepped up on the next possession and drilled a corner three, which proved to be the game-winning basket down the stretch, as neither team would score another point in the final two minutes of play.
Game Notes: Despite being held to their lowest point total this season, 17 offensive boards allowed RU to score 10 second chance points, while 29 points from the bench gave Regis a 13-point advantage in bench scoring. An off-night from beyond the arc, the team finished 4-of-20 (20 percent) from three-point land, and 22-of-56 (39.3 percent) from the field, but six blocked shots and six steals helped keep the Yellow Jacket offense in check for most the game. The Rangers held BHSU to 37.5 (9-24) shooting in the second half including a putrid nine percent (1-11) from deep.
Next Up for the Rangers: The men's team will remain in South Dakota as they head over to Rapid City to quarrel with the Hardrockers of South Dakota School of Mines (7-4, 3-2 RMAC) tomorrow night at 5:30 p.m.
