Regis baseball gets back to winning ways, sweeps Saturday doubleheader at NMHU

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

LAS VEGAS, N.M.- After holding out hope for playing the games in Denver following a snowstorm, the Regis University baseball team (8-13, 2-8 RMAC) made the trip to New Mexico Highlands University (5-18, 2-8 RMAC) to face the Cowboys in a four-game conference series.

The first two games of the series were held on Saturday with one nine-inning game beginning at noon, and a seven-inning game played at 3 p.m. Regis got back to their winning ways taking both games from the home team. The Rangers took game one by a score of 17-6 and game two 8-4.

After an extended stretch of rough losses, RU opened up game one with one run in the first inning coming off a sacrifice fly from senior Ty Overboe, which scored junior Josh Newell from first base.

It was not until the fifth inning that Regis did the most damage. The Rangers put together a seven-run inning that gave them an 8-0 advantage. Singles from junior Max Fabricant, and Overboe, coupled with doubles from sophomore Connor Rochon and senior Dylan Navarro led to a huge fifth inning from RU.

Regis added two runs in the seventh, four in the eighth, and three more in the ninth for their highest scoring game of the year, earning the 17-6 victory. In his first game back after injuring his finger in a game a few weeks ago, senior Drew LaComb collected a game-high four hits, in five at-bats. LaComb scored four runs and picked up one RBI in the game.

Newell (3-5, 2B 3B, 4 R, BB), Overboe (3-5, 4 RBI's, 3 R), and Rochon (3-5, 2B, 3B, 3R, 3RBI's) all had three hits in the game and helped back the great pitching from junior Brad Thoutt. Thoutt threw 8.2 masterful innings, coming one out shy of throwing a complete game. The sophomore struck out 11 NMHU batters, and did not surrender a run until the bottom of the eighth inning.

Game two was a much closer game, but the Rangers held on for the 8-4 victory to sweep the doubleheader.

The scoring began in the bottom of the second inning as the Cowboys pushed one run across the plate to take an early 1-0 lead. That was the last time NMHU would have the lead in the game. In the visiting half of the third inning, RU scored two runs on a double from Newell, scoring senior Weston Byers, and a single from Overboe, scoring Newell.

With a 2-1 lead, Regis extended their lead in the top of the fourth coming on a single from Newell, which allowed sophomore Mickey Meinhofer to score. LaComb then doubled to left-center field, pushing Fabricant across the plate and giving the Rangers a 4-1 lead.

The Cowboys tied the game at four runs apiece on a two RBI single in the bottom of the fourth. With six outs to play with, Rochon doubled down the right field line, scoring LaComb and Fabricant on the play to give RU a 6-4 lead. Regis scored two more runs to close out the game 8-4 against NMHU.

Sophomore Noah Gotsis threw six innings striking out four Cowboy batters, without surrendering a walk. Newell (1 RBI), LaComb (1 RBI), and Rochon (2 RBI's) each had two hits in the game and helped the Rangers pick up their second win of the day.

The baseball team will remain at NMHU to play a second doubleheader with the Cowboys tomorrow, using the same format as the doubleheader played today, one nine-inning game played at noon, and a seven-inning affair at 3 p.m.
