Box Score 2 GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – After a solid home series last weekend, the Regis University baseball team (14-19, 8-13 RMAC) made the trip to Colorado Mesa University (32-6, 22-3 RMAC) to face the top dog in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference (RMAC) and came up four runs short and a few errors too many on a late Friday night.
Following a lengthy rain delay, Regis and CMU got the game started. For the first three and a half innings, the pitchers were dominating on each side as junior Brad Thoutt and the starting pitcher for the home team combined to give up only one hit through 21 outs.
In the bottom of the fourth inning, the Mavericks got on the board for three runs, none of them earned, as two errors helped CMU to take the lead. Unfortunately for the Rangers, the Maverick pitching staff was on point surrendering only one hit the entire game.
The lone RU hit came in the top of the fifth inning as senior Dylan Navarro singled through the right side to give Regis their third baserunner of the ballgame. The home team would scratch across another run in the bottom of the seventh, but the Rangers were unable to find the flow they needed offensively, falling to the Mavericks 4-0.
Thoutt whirled a spectacular game against the top team in the conference as he went five innings without giving up an earned run. He scattered four hits over his five innings, walking two batters, and striking out three batters. Junior Adam Montano came on in relief and gave up only one run in three innings of work. Montano struck out four of the hitters that he faced, allowing three hits and two walks.
The baseball team will remain in Grand Junction for the next two days as they play a doubleheader with CMU tomorrow, Saturday, April 16 at 1 p.m. and 4 p.m., with the series finale set for Sunday, April 17 at noon.
