Box Score DENVER, Colo. – The Regis University volleyball team began Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference action at cross-town rival the Metropolitan State University of Denver Roadrunners (6-3, 1-0 RMAC). Regis opened RMAC play falling to the Roadrunners in four sets moving to an overall record of 4-5 and 0-1 in conferece.
The Rangers experienced a slow start forcing head coach
Frank Lavrisha to call a timeout at 10-5 in favor of the Roadrunners. RU struggled to slow down the heavy-hitting offense of MSU Denver throughout much of the first set.
Katie Klein was the only Ranger producing offensively as Regis tried to battle back. Ultimately, an unusual amount of unforced errors was the culprit for RU dropping the first set 25-15.
Regis cleaned it up and looked more organized at the start of the second set exchanging point-for-point with the Roadrunners. The Rangers took their first lead of the match at 11-8. Three-straight RU points forced an MSU Denver timeout at 14-11 in favor of the visitors.
RU continued to control the remainder of the second set turning a .097 attack percentage into .171 receiving more help offensively from
Caitlyn Martinez and
Yagoda Jedrzejczak. A 20-16 Ranger lead forced another Roadrunner timeout. Regis held off a final MSU Denver surge to even the score up at 1-1 with the 25-21 second set win.
Several lead changes and ties heightened the level of competition in the third set of this RMAC showdown that never disappoints. The third set saw continuous back-and-forth action from both teams. The Roadrunners controlled a slight 19-17 lead when Regis used a timeout in hopes of stopping the run by the home team. The Rangers tried to stay alive late in the set but MSU Denver snuck away the 25-21 win to take an overall 2-1 match lead.
Regis jumped out to an early 6-2 lead in the fourth that the Roadrunners attempted to slow down with a timeout. It proved successful as MSU Denver took three-straight points to come within one, 6-5. The score would tie at 12-12 and lock up again at 19-19 but RU could not hold off the Roadrunners dropping the fourth set 25-22.
Klein produced a season-best 15 kills on 33 attempts committing just one error for another season-high .424 attack percentage.
Maggie Steward added nine kills and kept 13 plays alive while
Diamond Ridley-Pierce chipped in with eight kills and two blocks. In addition to Steward's defense,
Drew Rhamy and
Kristina Schell combined for 24 digs and
Silvia Basso dished up a season-high 34 assists.
The Rangers remain on the road for a match in Colorado Springs, Colorado against the UC-Colorado Springs Mountain Lions (5-4, 0-1 RMAC) on Saturday, September 17 at 5 p.m.
