Box Score DURANGO, Colo. – The No.12 ranked Regis University men's soccer team (5-0-0, 2-0 RMAC) made the trip to Fort Lewis College (2-4-0, 1-1 RMAC) to battle the Skyhawks in a highly anticipated match of the weekend. The clash lived up to the hype as Regis earned their fifth straight win on an incredible goal in the final seconds of the second period of overtime.
The first half did not amount to a whole lot as each team failed to beat their opposing keepers, the Rangers took four shots, putting two on target while holding the home team to only four shots in the half and only one shot on goal.
As the teams headed into the break deadlocked at 0-0, each side regrouped and refocused looking to break the scoreless tie in the second half.
RU came out with a different form of intensity, tracking down all of the 50/50 balls, counter attacking when the opportunities presented themselves. The game plan paid off as the hero from one game ago, Grimley, broke the stalemate with his third goal of the season, giving Regis a 1-0 lead in the 54
th minute.
Junior
Sawyer Lincoln picked up his first assist of the year on the play as he slotted the ball into space giving Grimley the chance to bury the shot from 10 yards out. After netting the goal, Regis got back to their foundation and locked down defensively.
The Rangers had the game all but won until the Skyhawks drew a penalty in the box and were awarded a penalty kick in the 88th minute. FLC's Salifu Jatta stepped up and tied the game once again at one goal apiece.
For the first time this season, RU would play a game that extended into an overtime period. After an uneventful first period of overtime, the game moved into the second period looking for a victor. With less than 30 seconds left, Regis was awarded a throw-in and freshman
Porter Milner, who is known for his remarkable ability to use a flip throw-in to heave a ball more than 30 yards, and he did exactly that.
Milner hurled the ball nearly 35 yards in the air towards the far post where Grimley was waiting. The 6'6" Grimley got his head on the ball and netted the game winner, giving the Rangers the 2-1 victory with only 18 seconds remaining.
Both teams fired at will as they combined for 33 shots (FLC-19, RU-14), with each side putting six shots on goal. RU had seven corner kicks, limiting the Skyhawks to only four. A total of eight yellow cards were issued with Regis tallying five and FLC earning the other three. Sophomore
Chase Webert (4-0-0) picked up his fourth victory of the season, facing 19 shots, and making five saves in 110 minutes.
The men's soccer team will return home for one game against South Dakota Mines on Friday, September 23 at 2 p.m. before hitting the road again for games against Westminster College on September 25 at 2:30 p.m. and Colorado Christian University on September 30 at 11 a.m.
