Rangers outlast Colorado Mesa in five-set thriller

Box Score DENVER, Colo. – The Regis University volleyball team outlasted the visiting Colorado Mesa Mavericks (8-3, 2-1 RMAC) in a Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference match-up that is always proves a fight until the end. All Rangers were clicking tonight coming together in the fifth set to hand the Mavericks their first conference loss of the season.

The offensive charge was led by senior Katie Klein and freshman Kelsey Green both putting down 17 kills apiece combining for 34 of the teams 57 kills. The battle began from the beginning of the opening set. Regis slowly began to pull away mid-first set but the Mavericks responded. Ultimately, RU held off CMU to go ahead 1-0 in the match with the 25-22 win.

Colorado Mesa held a 13-8 lead in the second set leaving the Rangers to battle from behind. Regis was relentless throughout the match but showed how strong they are as a team by never giving up. Although, the Mavericks evened the score 1-1 with the 25-23 second set win, RU was resilient.

Both teams exchanged point-for-point in the third set neither allowing the other to go ahead more than two points. The Rangers rallied off four-straight to hold a 22-19 lead over CMU. In a set that went to a 28-26 result, eventually, put the Regis behind in the match 2-1.

RU opened the fourth set with another four-straight with Silvia Basso at service. The Rangers continued to lead until the Mavericks tied things up, 9-9. The momentum shifted in favor of the visitors as they held a 19-17 lead over Regis. The Rangers bounced back to take the fourth set 27-25 and keep the match alive at two sets apiece.

Regis exploded at the beginning of the fifth set becoming theirs to lose. Five-straight points from RU, including three-straight block assists, forced a Colorado Mesa timeout. After the exchange midway through the set, 8-4, CMU rallied off a few of their own but the Rangers responded again. The Rangers finished off the

Mavericks scoring the final four points to earn their first RMAC victory of the season.

As a group, the Rangers put together arguably their best match of the season recording 14 team blocks led by Yagoda Jedrzejczak with eight and Kristen Hornung with six. Offensively, RU was outhit by CMU 70-57 but it was Regis that was more efficient scoring big points at crucial points throughout the match. The Rangers hit at a .241 clip to the Mavericks .143. Diamond Ridley-Pierce added seven kills and three blocks.

Silvia Basso had a career-high 46 assists while Drew Rhamy and Kristina Schell kept a combined 26 plays alive. Rhamy recorded a season-high four service aces.

The Rangers host Western State (6-5, 2-1 RMAC) Saturday, September 24 at 5 p.m.
