Box Score 2 SAN ANGELO, Texas – The Regis University Rangers volleyball team closed out the opening weekend of action with another split. The Rangers defeated the St Mary's University Lady Rattlers in straight sets but suffered a 3-1 loss against the No. 22 Angelo State Belles.
"Overall, it was a great look at this year's roster and finding our best lineups," said head coach
Frank Lavrisha. "We know our weaknesses and now where to focus our efforts to improve, we are looking forward to the Colorado Premier Challenge next weekend."
Match 1: Regis 3 St. Mary's 0
The score tied five times and the lead changed three throughout the first set as RU battled back-and-forth with the Lady Rattlers. RU closed out the 25-18 first set win with five straight points, including two kills from
Diamond Ridley-Pierce.
St. Mary's jumped out to a quick 3-0 lead at the start of the second but Regis responded with six of their own to take control. The fight from the first set continued as the scored would tie 19 times until a Ranger 32-30 victory.
RU opened the third set with a 5-0 lead with
Gabby Haugh at service. The Rangers would not allow the Lady Rattlers to come much closer throughout the length of the set as a 25-16 win ended the match. Freshman
Kelsey Green led Regis with ten kills, her second double-digit kill production as a Ranger.
Katie Klein and Ridley-Pierce added eight kills a piece with
Rachael McCue with seven.
12 team blocks by RU, led by
Kristen Hornung with three solo blocks, helped to keep the Lady Rattlers attack at bay.
Kristina Schell chipped in with a team-leading 11 digs and two service aces.
Match 2: Angelo State 3 Regis 1
Angelo State jumped out to an early 6-1 lead that put the Rangers in a position of fighting from behind throughout the first set. A four-point surge late in the set fell short as RU dropped 25-17.
Regis saw an offensive surge mid-second set that placed them in control of the lead never to look back as RU equalized with the 25-21 win. The Rangers fell behind in the third set when the Belles scored five straight to lead 11-7. RU was never able to follow recover from the deficit to drop the third 25-15.
The fourth set was a fight from the beginning as the lead tied 12 times and changed seven. The Belles took a late 23-22 lead as Regis responded with a kill but could not muster up anymore points to end the second day of the opening weekend with another split.
Three Rangers recorded double-digit kills led by Klein with 14, Green with 13 and
Maggie Steward with ten.
RU will return to their home court to face Arkansas-Fort Smith in the the first match of the Premier Challenge on Friday, September 9 at 3:30 p.m.
