Box Score DENVER, Colo. – The Regis University men's basketball team returned home for the first time since New Year's Eve to play host to the Westminster College Griffins (7-6, 7-4 RMAC) in the first of two matchups between the teams in the coming weeks.
Regis (12-4, 6-4 RMAC) fell to the Griffins 70-55 snapping their six-game win streak on Saturday night.
Noah King seemed to be the only player providing consistent scoring for the Rangers throughout the game as he led with 18. King went 5-of-8 (62.5%) from the field and 5-of-6 (80.0%) from distance while chipping in with three rebounds, one steal and one assist. The next highest scoring players for RU were sophomore
Jarrett Brodbeck (3-12 FG) and junior
Kevin Metoyer (3-12 FG, four assists) each adding seven points on the night.
How It Happened: Both teams went basket-for-basket at the start of the game as the score tied five times in the opening 12 minutes. A King three-pointer sparked a 7-1 for the Rangers to pull away 16-22 with 5:21 remaining before the break.
The Griffins responded with an 11-0 run of their own to overcome the deficit and lead 29-22 over Regis.
Elijah Sanders knocked down back-to-back 15-foot jumpers in the final 1:41 followed by a King three-pointer at the buzzer to give the Rangers back a 31-30 lead at halftime.
The battle of the first half continued into the second as the Rangers tried to slow the game down to the half court but Westminster insisted on a much quicker pace. The Griffins put together an 8-0 run just before the first media timeout of the second half to switch the lead in favor of the visitors, 40-38.
WC continued to displace the RU offense as they held a 50-38 lead, the largest by either team thus far, at the 11:36 mark. The Rangers offensive struggles continued throughout the following several minutes as the Griffins were ultimately able to secure the defeat over the home team.
Game Notes: Westminster reached the foul line 21 more times than RU. The Rangers were slightly edged on the boards 37-31, however, RU chased down 12 offensive boards. Regis shot 34.9 (22-63) percent from the field and 26.7 (8-30) from beyond the arc. RU forced 11 turnovers converting for 13 points.
