Box Score ALAMOSA, Colo. – For the third time this season, a buzzer-beater sinks the Regis University men's basketball team (12-6, 6-6 RMAC). This time it was the Adams State University Grizzlies (10-10, 7-7 RMAC) taking Regis down in the only meeting between the teams this season.
Junior
Kevin Metoyer scored a team-high 17 points, shooting 7-of-12 from the field, dropping eight assists in the effort. Sophomore
Jarrett Brodbeck chipped in with 16 points of his own, and freshman
Christian Little was the only other Ranger to net double-figures with 10.
How It Happened: For the second night in a row, Brodbeck led Regis with 11 points as both teams headed into halftime. The guard knocked down three shots from beyond the arc while junior
Kevin Metoyer dished out seven assists in his first 16 minutes on the floor as the Rangers found themselves down two points at the end of the first half.
The second half was controlled primarily by the Grizzlies as they extended their lead to as many as 13 points, 66-53, midway through the second half. ASU did not surrender their second half lead until RU took a 75-73 lead with 29 seconds on the clock. A free-throw from Brodbeck, and one from the Grizzlies gave Regis a 76-74 lead with the clock winding down. On the final possession of the game, Brodbeck got a hand on the inbound pass that found its way to an ASU player who threw up an off-balance three-point jumper that rattled off the backboard, and the rim, before dropping through the net giving ASU the 77-76 win.
Game Notes: Despite knocking down eight three-pointers and limiting the Grizzlies to only two, the Rangers allowed ASU to shoot 54.2 percent from the field while they connected on only 48.3 percent of their attempts. For the second night in a row Regis was outscored in the paint 50-30, while also trailing 38-30 in rebounds. RU limited their turnovers to only 15, but they were unable to hold off the home team in the end.
Next Up for the Rangers: The men's basketball team will return home next weekend to host New Mexico Highlands University (7-11, 5-8 RMAC) on Friday, January 27 at 7 p.m. followed by a matchup with the always tough Colorado State University-Pueblo Thunderwolves (12-6, 10-3 RMAC) on Saturday, January 28 also at 7 p.m.
