Box Score DENVER, Colo. – Saturday evening Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference (RMAC) action featured the top two teams in the league as the No. 18 Regis University Rangers hosted the No. 4 Colorado State University-Pueblo ThunderWolves (21-0, 15- RMAC). The Rangers were tested but ultimately could not keep up with the ThunderWolves production falling 65-51.
With seven three-point baskets, one shy of tying the single-game record,
Mary Sigler led Regis with a career-high 29 points on her best offensive shooting night of the season. Sigler went 10-of-20 from the field, 7-of-14 from distance and 2-of-3 from the line. She also chipped in with five boards, an assist, a block and two steals.
Majestie Robinson added 10 points of her own while dishing out four assists.
Shelby Espinosa hit the boards hard again pulling down 12, five of which were offensive.
How It Happened: The battle between these two top-20 teams lived up to just that. An extremely fast-paced up-and-down game gave way to a slow start offensively for both teams. After the first media timeout, play slowed down to more of a half-court offensive set battle.
Sigler hit back-to-back three's at the end of the first quarter to keep the score tight in favor of the ThunderWolves 18-16. Sigler started the second quarter off with one more from distance to give the Rangers the lead at 19-18, the first since the halfway mark of the first quarter.
Regis' offensive production halted going nearly five minutes without a field goal. Sigler dropped her sixth three-pointer of the first half with 20 seconds remaining as the Rangers followed it up with a huge defensive stop and a pair of blocks from Sigler and
Karlyn Johnson to close out the half.
CSU-Pueblo put together a 9-0 run in the third quarter to force an RU timeout midway through the quarter. The ThunderWolves pushed their lead to the largest of the game thus far at 52-36 with just over a minute to play before the final quarter.
Robinson knocked down a pair of back-to-back three's at the start of the fourth as the Rangers went on an 8-0 run. CSU-Pueblo did not stay scoreless for long. Regis continued battling but could not muster any more of a comeback. RU has had two streaks of six wins this season.
Games Notes: The Rangers once again outrebounded their opponent 41-39 while tallying 15 offensive boards. Regis experienced their toughest offensive struggle this season shooting 24.6 percent (15-61) from the field, 25 percent (9-36) from beyond the arc and 63.2 percent (12-19) from the line. RU converted 16 points off 11 CSU-Pueblo turnovers. The Rangers move to an overall record of 16-3 overall and 11-3 in the conference. With losses from Colorado Mesa and UC-Colorado Springs, Regis stays in sole possession of second in the RMAC.
Next Up For The Rangers: Regis remains at home next weekend hosting Colorado Mines (13-11, 9-6 RMAC) Friday, February 3 at 5 p.m. and Colorado Christian (8-12, 6-9 RMAC) Saturday, February 4 at 5 p.m.
