RU opens new year with dominating win over Western State

Box Score GUNNISON, Colo. – The Regis University women's basketball team started the new year off with a dominating 72-53 victory on the road over the Western State Mountaineers (3-9, 2-6 RMAC). The Rangers put up their highest point total in conference play thus far this season to improve to an overall mark of 11-2 and 6-2 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference.
 
Kaylie Rader finished the evening just one-point shy of tying her RU career scoring record. She put up 21 points while shooting an astonishing 9-for-10 from the field. Rader also led the team in rebounding pulling down a total of eight, including chasing down three offensive boards.
 
Mary Sigler added 15 points, which marks her fourth-straight game of double-digit production, five rebounds and four steals. Sigler went 6-for-10 form the field and 2-for-4 from beyond the arc.
 
How It Happened: The Mountaineers put up a fight throughout much of the first half and it started from the tip. The score was locked, 17-17, after the first quarter of play. Western State continued to hang around in the second quarter responding to every Ranger field-goal. Regis closed out play just before halftime with a 5-0 run holding the Mountaineers without a bucket for the final three minutes to lead 35-28 at the break.
 
The Rangers slowly began distancing themselves at the start of the second half. On a Sigler layup at the 5:56 mark in the third quarter, RU held the largest lead of the game thus far at 45-31. The Mountaineers fought to bring the deficit back to ten but Regis responded to keep the home team from mountain any sort of comeback.
 
The RU domination continued into the fourth quarter and throughout the remainder of the game. Serena Gudino gave the Rangers their largest lead of the game draining one from distance, 72-48, with under a minute to play.
 
Game Notes: The Mountaineers sent the Rangers to the line 25 times. Regis shot 45.6 (26-57) percent from the field and 26.3 (5-19) from three. RU forced 17 turnovers while taking care of the ball on their end with just eight turnovers and tallied 17 assists. Morgan Ducklow led in the assist column with four while Rader, Majestie Robinson and Chante Church each contributed with three apiece. The Rangers slightly won the battle on the boards outrebounding Western State 32-30. RU scored 40 of their 72 points in the paint and 13 from second chance opportunities. All but one player who saw minutes in tonight's game scored a basket.
 
Next Up For The Rangers: RU is headed to Colorado Mesa Saturday, January 7 for a 5:30 p.m. tip-off in Grand Junction, Colo. Colorado Mesa (9-3, 6-2 RMAC) is tied for fourth in the league with the Rangers and most recently defeated Chadron State 82-56.
