DENVER, Colo. - The Regis University men's soccer team (5-3, 3-3 RMAC) picked up their second important conference victory of the weekend beating the Colorado Christian University Cougars (1-8-1, 1-5 RMAC) 4-1 in Sunday.
How It Happened: Regis opened the gates early and on their first attack redshirt-sophomore
Ryan Ebert took a shot that hit the cross bar, collected the rebound and then blasted the ball past the keeper for a 1-0 lead with only 44 seconds coming off the clock.
The visitors responded with a goal of their own that slipped through the hands of senior goalkeeper
Ciaran Gibson, knotting the game at one goal apiece in the 21
st minute. 13 minutes after the goal from CCU, Ebert was back at it attacking down the near side of the field where he was tackled in the box, drawing penalty opportunity for the home squad. Junior
Josh Burnett stepped up and drilled his shot to give the Rangers another one goal lead, 2-1.
The final scoring play of the first half went to RU as redshirt-freshman
Will Eslinger got the ball to sophomore
Oliver Haines who slotted home his third goal of the season to put the home side up by two goals just before halftime.
Regis knocked the ball around with great passing skill, keeping the Cougars from possessing the ball for very long in the second half. As they moved the ball around, they found themselves with numbers in the box, so freshman
Caleb Larson delivered a ball into the crowd and junior
Jacob Barker connected with a foot and netted his first goal of the season to put the Rangers ahead for good, 4-1.
Game Notes: RU took 25 total shots in the game with nine shots on goal. The defense limited CCU to only five shots, and three shots on goal for the match. The corner kick battle also tilted in favor of the Blue and Gold by a tally of 6-4. Freshman
John Halter took a game-high four shots, putting one of them on target. Ebert and Burnett each finished with one goal on two shots apiece. Larson and Eslinger each notched an assist in the match, while Haines and Barker each scored one goal each.
Up Next for the Rangers: The men's soccer team will host the Colorado School of Mines Orediggers on Wednesday, October 4 at 4 p.m. on the Regis Match Pitch before matching up with the South Dakota School of Mines Hardrockers on Friday, October 6 in Rapid City, South Dakota.
